“I’m Speechless” - Will Smith Basks in 'Michael’s' Glory, Commends Antoine Fuqua and Team

Will Smith has never been shy about his admiration for Michael Jackson, and the release of the long-awaited biopic Michael (2026) gave him the perfect moment to show it. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson, the film has taken the world by storm since its opening weekend. Smith caught the film, and what happened next was a reaction nobody who saw it could forget.
Even the biggest stars in Hollywood could not stay silent, watching Jaafar Jackson become Michael Jackson on screen.

Will Smith watched Michael and had no words. Caught on camera mid-film with a look of pure shock on his face, Smith shared the moment publicly on his Instagram Story. The clip showed him watching Jaafar Jackson perform on stage, visibly stunned.
"Wow. @antoinefuqua & the whole @michaelmovie team... I'm speechless," he wrote, tagging the director and the film's official account directly. Smith's reaction carries real weight given his long personal history with the King of Pop.
In the early '90s, the two were literally locked together in a dark utility closet backstage at the BET Awards, where they spent several minutes talking about comic books. Smith later admitted he knew nothing about the topic but kept the conversation going just to stay in the presence of his idol. Their bond even extended to film; Jackson personally called to land a cameo in Men in Black II (2002), insisting on playing an MIB agent so he could wear the iconic black suit alongside Smith.
As Will Smith's shock fades into admiration, the real question is, does the film earning $217 million in a single weekend justify all that speechlessness?
Michael shatters box office records
The numbers behind Michael are genuinely staggering. In its opening weekend alone, the film grossed approximately $217.4 million worldwide, surpassing Oppenheimer's $180 million to claim the biggest global opening for any biopic ever made. Domestically, it nearly doubled Straight Outta Compton's $60.2 million record. Originally tracked to open at $50–60 million, the film wildly over-performed every early projection Lionsgate had set.

The audience, however, is far more enthusiastic than the critics. Fans gave the film a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, praising Jaafar Jackson's uncanny ability to replicate his uncle's moves, voice, and magnetism. Critics, on the other hand, landed it at a 38% Rotten score. The $200 million production famously underwent $50 million in reshoots after the original third act covering the 1993 claims was cut for legal reasons. For Will Smith, though, the verdict was already in the moment the credits rolled: "speechless."
