The Colbert-CBS controversy has taken on a life of its own in the entertainment world. It has now become a talking point far beyond the world of late-night TV. CBS canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in July 2025, just days after Colbert publicly criticized Paramount for a $16 million settlement with Donald Trump regarding a 60 Minutes interview. However, the cancellation did not stop Colbert from taking home an Emmy. 

Colbert has now put his CBS chapter behind him, making it clear that he has no desire to remain tied to the network. 

Stephen Colbert recently won his seventh and final Emmy for the final season of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! the host asked Colbert whether he received any congratulations from CBS for his Emmy win. 

“I am not familiar with that organization,” Colbert responded. Colbert also shared that apart from the Emmys, he also took home about 40 suits he wore in the late-night program throughout its 11-season run. 

“If anyone is, like, just got out of law school and needs a suit, please call Jimmy. He’ll get the message to me,” Colbert quipped. The retired late-night host stated he has no plans to return to the format. Instead, he is currently co-writing a new movie project.

Colbert is developing The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, alongside his son and seasoned Tolkien screenwriter Philippa Boyens. 

Set 14 years after the passing of Frodo Baggins, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past follows an older Samwise Gamgee, Merry, and Pippin as they decide to retrace the beginnings of their adventure. Amid this quest, Sam’s daughter, Elanor Gamgee, uncovers a long-buried secret that pushes her to figure out more about the War of the Ring.

Colbert, apart from working on tech startups, is reportedly adapting six chapters from The Fellowship of the Ring that were skipped in the original movie trilogy. He actively pitched the narrative framing device to Peter Jackson, the director of the monumental The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy. It seems clear that Colbert has already figured out his next career move away from CBS.
