Me Before You star Sam Claflin recently opened up on the Happy Place podcast about insecurities related to his physical appearance. Speaking of his early career, he recalled being told just a week before filming that he would have to take his shirt off in a scene, which made him nervous. And since Claflin had not worked out, he felt pressured about his appearance.
“I’m incredibly insecure. I just went to a screening of a film I was in and everyone immediately afterwards [asked], ‘How was it?’ And ‘I hated it.’ It’s my face, I don’t like [it],” he shared.
Claflin has previously shared with The Telegraph that his body dysmorphia began after his screen debut as Philip Swift in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011). Further on the podcast, he reflected that the feelings may have started even earlier, in his teenage years, when he first became self-conscious about his looks. He recalled feeling embarrassed during his physical education class when he could not do a pull-up.
He also spoke about the pressure of having a certain seemingly ripped physique in Hollywood to have a success.
Now, he is far from alone in this struggle. Other actors, including Megan Fox, have also spoken openly about dealing with body dysmorphia.
