Marvel Studios may have just found its next generation of superheroes, but Kevin Feige is already thinking far beyond their first adventure. With a remarkably young ensemble stepping into some of the X-Men’s most iconic roles, Marvel appears to be playing the long game with its newest mutants. And if Feige’s latest tease is anything to go by, this reboot could be the beginning of a very, very long saga.

The mutants are barely entering the MCU, and Feige is already imagining just how far their story could go.

During the D23 presentation, Marvel Studios unveiled its new X-Men lineup, but Kevin Feige was already looking far beyond the first movie. Speaking at D23’s Disney World builders panel, the Marvel Studios president addressed the long-term vision for the MCU’s standalone X-Men and pointed to the cast’s young ages as a major advantage. He suggested the studio could have “100 more” movies featuring these characters, turning a simple cast reveal into something much bigger and hinting that Marvel sees this new generation not as a one-off reboot, but as the foundation for a potentially enormous mutant era.

“And that’s great, because there’s been 10 great X-Men movies [but] there can be 100 more." Feige revealed at D23’s Disney Worldbuilders panel.

However, besides the revelation, the cast includes Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver also joins the ensemble as the iconic mutant villain Mister Sinister, giving the reboot a formidable antagonist from the start. With so many of its stars at relatively early stages of their careers, Marvel has plenty of room to let these characters grow across multiple phases.

And if Marvel really wants these young mutants to carry the franchise for years, the first mission has to give them a world audiences haven’t already seen.

The upcoming X-Men reboot is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028, with Jake Schreier directing after previously helming Thunderbolts and episodes of Beef. Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are writing the screenplay, with the creative team drawing inspiration from Chris Claremont’s character-driven comics and Jonathan Hickman’s modern mutant mythology. Marvel has also indicated that the movie will avoid simply recycling familiar stories from the Fox era, including the heavily adapted Dark Phoenix storyline.

Instead, the reboot is expected to explore fresh dynamics surrounding mutant identity, prejudice, and discrimination within the established MCU. Adam Driver’s Mister Sinister also adds a particularly intriguing threat, given the character’s comic-book obsession with mutant genetics and the bloodlines of powerful mutants. With Xavier, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Rogue, and Storm forming the core lineup, Marvel is setting up a younger X-Men generation that could theoretically grow alongside the MCU for years to come.

And with a young cast, fresh creative direction, and the possibility of “100 more” movies, the MCU could be preparing for its longest-running superhero chapter yet.
