The truth is out there, but Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot had been taking its sweet time finding a home. Despite completing a two-hour pilot in Vancouver under the working title Alphabet Soup, the filmmaker’s revival remained in limbo as Disney and Hulu held off on a series order, leaving Mulder and Scully fans waiting for answers.

Now, Hulu has finally cracked the case, greenlighting Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot and bringing the iconic sci-fi franchise back into active development.

Hulu has finally confirmed Ryan Coogler's The X-Files

Some mysteries refuse to stay buried, and Hulu has officially decided that The X-Files deserves another trip into the unknown. Ryan Coogler’s reboot has secured a full series order, giving the celebrated filmmaker room to expand his vision beyond the pilot. The next chapter will preserve the franchise’s fascination with the inexplicable while opening a fresh casebook for a new generation.

The new series will star Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler as two highly decorated FBI agents whose contrasting personalities lead to an unlikely partnership. Their assignment takes them to a long-shuttered division dedicated to unexplained phenomena, placing the pair at the center of cases that defy conventional explanations. Rather than recasting Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, the reboot will introduce new investigators while returning to the eerie mysteries that made the original series a television phenomenon.

Ryan Coogler directed and wrote the pilot, while Jennifer Yale will take charge as showrunner, steering the series through its supernatural investigations. Original creator Chris Carter is also attached as an executive producer, connecting the new chapter to the franchise’s legacy. The pilot’s guest cast includes Steve Buscemi, Amy Madigan, Ben Foster, and Devery Jacobs, adding even more intrigue to Hulu’s latest trip into the unexplained.

Ryan Coogler's version of The X-Men

Ryan Coogler is not looking to reopen The X-Files merely to give longtime fans a nostalgic trip down memory lane. His reimagining aims to preserve the unsettling charm of the original while introducing a new generation of FBI agents, played by Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, to a world where the inexplicable refuses to stay unexplained. The result promises a contemporary perspective on the paranormal without abandoning the franchise’s defining mysteries.

Coogler also wants to bring the series’ horror roots back into sharp focus, promising stories frightening enough to satisfy even devoted genre fans. The familiar believer-versus-skeptic dynamic will remain central, alongside standalone monster-of-the-week cases and a larger conspiracy that unfolds across the series. With modern anxieties such as surveillance and artificial intelligence offering fresh territory for paranoia, Coogler’s vision could give The X-Files a chilling new relevance.
