Hugh Jackman’s latest film, The Death of Robin Hood, has recorded his lowest opening weekend for a wide-release movie in five years. Hugh Jackman has built a career on leading blockbuster franchises, acclaimed dramas, and crowd-pleasing hits. From superhero spectacles to musical successes, the actor has remained one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars for decades.
However, not every project follows the same trajectory at the box office. His latest release, The Death of Robin Hood, arrived with an intriguing premise and a star-studded cast, but its early theatrical performance has sparked conversations about how audiences are responding to this darker reimagining of the legendary outlaw.

According to Deadline, The Death of Robin Hood is currently expected to generate around $2.5 million during its first three days in North American theaters from 1,762 locations. The film is projected to finish ninth on the domestic chart, trailing several newer releases despite facing less direct competition within its genre. The opening marks Hugh Jackman’s weakest debut for a wide-release film in five years as reported by Deadline.
The last movie to open lower was 2021’s Reminiscence, which launched during a challenging pandemic-era marketplace. While The Death of Robin Hood was produced on a smaller scale than many of Jackman’s recent projects, its early numbers suggest it may face an uphill battle in reaching profitability during its theatrical run.
As the box office results continue to unfold, the film’s unique interpretation of Robin Hood remains one of its most talked-about aspects.
Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer reveal a different side of Robin Hood
One of the biggest factors separating The Death of Robin Hood from previous adaptations is its willingness to challenge the heroic image traditionally associated with the character. Rather than portraying Robin Hood as an unquestioned champion of the people, the film explores the possibility that the legend itself was carefully constructed and manipulated. Speaking to Film Updates, Hugh Jackman explained what initially drew him to the project.
“What I thought was so brilliant about this was, what if the legend or the mythology or the folk hero of Robin Hood was actually created by him for not-great purposes, in order to make people do whatever he wanted, and control people and manipulate people, and that there's a darkness to him? And so then as the movie goes along, you see him using story in a redemptive sense,” said Hugh Jackman while talking about The Death of Robin Hood to Film Updates.

The film follows Robin as he grapples with the consequences of his past actions and attempts to reshape the legacy he helped create. Alongside Jodie Comer, Jackman leads a story that focuses less on heroic adventure and more on redemption, accountability, and the power of storytelling.
Despite its soft debut, the film’s darker take on a familiar legend may continue to attract viewers looking for a different kind of Robin Hood tale. As audiences gradually discover its unconventional approach, the film could still find momentum through curiosity and word-of-mouth in the weeks ahead.
