Hugh Jackman Reveals How the Idea for Never-Seen-Before Logan in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Landed on the Table

Wolverine is a name that has popped up in the Deadpool franchise a lot of times before. Fans even got a short cameo of Hugh Jackman in Deadpool 2 when the Merc with a Mouth went back in time to erase the sewn-shut-mouth Deadpool variant from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Yet, no one foresaw Wolverine taking on one of the leading roles in the Deadpool franchise after capping off his epic 17-year run in Fox's X-Men. However, the story of how this idea came to light has not really been talked about enough.

Jackman recently revealed how Wolverine's comeback and integration into the MCU with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool was mapped out.

This would be Hugh Jackman's debut as Wolverine in the MCU, and whether it will be his final go-around or the beginning of a new chapter is still anyone's guess. But it looks like this will not be the same Logan fans have seen before in the X-Men franchise. The idea for a fresh take on the beloved mutant just clicked for Jackman out of the blue during a long drive, the 55-year-old told Empire Magazine. As he cruised down the road for another hour, the thought still kept lingering in his mind.

Caught up in the excitement, Jackman could not help himself not do anything about the idea that just popped into his mind. He jumped out of his car and quickly called his pal Ryan Reynolds, saying, "Ryan, if you’ll have me, I’m in". While not everyone was immediately sold on the idea of Wolverine's return, Reynolds and Jackman, along with Shawn Levy, did everything to ensure Wolverine's role in the upcoming movie would be something special and unique.

Not Just an Action Extravaganza ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Is Much More for Ryan Reynolds

To begin with, fans have never seen prime Wolverine action in a Rated-R setting before. Logan was the first movie to explore a Rated-R Wolverine, but by then, Wolverine was already past his prime. It offered fleeting glimpses of what he could do in his heyday when he took the adrenaline shot, but that was it. With the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, fans might finally get a young, robust, Rated-R Wolverine since the mutant is expected to originate from a different timeline, as teased by Hugh Jackman himself.

There is also some anticipation for the Rated-R banter between him and Deadpool. The sight of Wade and Logan trading insults and ribbing each other without holding back is going to be hilarious, to say the least. Plus, the comic-accurate X-Men suit will provide that final touch of nostalgia fans need for this comeback. But the real highlight is getting to witness Hugh Jackman's Wolverine interacting with the MCU. Despite the recent strangeness of the multiverse puzzle, if they handle these interactions well, this never-seen-before take on Logan could really be a hit among fans.
