The world of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones spans nearly two centuries, but one bloodline connects some of the franchise's most iconic characters. As fans revisit House Targaryen's complicated history, many have found themselves wondering exactly where Rhaenyra Targaryen fits into Daenerys Targaryen's family tree.
The question has gained renewed attention following the appearance of Daenerys' appearance in Daemon's subconscious, in the second season of House of the Dragon, and now more recently, at the dawn of the third season. While the answer lies deep within Targaryen history, understanding their connection reveals just how important Rhaenyra's legacy becomes long after the events of the prequel series.

Although they live nearly 200 years apart, Rhaenyra Targaryen and Daenerys Targaryen are directly related through the Targaryen royal bloodline. Rhaenyra is one of Daenerys' ancestors, with the lineage continuing through her sons after the devastating Dance of the Dragons civil war. As a result, the future Mother of Dragons can trace her lineage back to the woman whose claim to the Iron Throne sparked one of Westeros' bloodiest conflicts.
Following the conflict, Rhaenyra's descendants continue to rule Westeros for generations. The family line eventually leads to King Aerys II Targaryen, better known as the Mad King, who is Daenerys' father. This makes Daenerys several generations removed from Rhaenyra, effectively making the Black Queen her great-great-great-great-great-grandmother in the broader Targaryen family tree.
A clearer understanding of that lineage also adds weight to the story still unfolding in House of the Dragon, particularly as Rhaenyra enters a new phase of her journey.
Emma D'Arcy teases a more determined Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon Season 3
Emma D'Arcy recently opened up about Rhaenyra's evolution in the upcoming third season of HBO's fantasy drama, explaining that the character is finally stepping into a position of confidence after years of uncertainty. After spending much of the series questioning her claim to the Iron Throne, Rhaenyra now appears poised to embrace her authority with greater conviction than ever before.
"My learning has that one has to be very strong in one's conviction. There's a nice journey that we see Rhaenyra go on over the course of the three seasons, where in the sort of first two, she is kind of wrapped by doubt," they told PTI (Press Trust of India) in a recent interview.

According to Emma D'Arcy in the interview, much of Rhaenyra's self-doubt regarding her inheritance, claim to the Iron Throne, and her father King Viserys' intentions begins to fade in Season 3. However, that growing certainty may come with darker consequences. The upcoming season, premiering June 21 on HBO and Max in the U.S., will see Rhaenyra wielding power with a new sense of certainty as the Targaryen civil war intensifies across Westeros.
Rhaenyra's story may take place generations before Daenerys, but her choices leave a lasting impact on House Targaryen's future. As House of the Dragon moves forward, fans will continue to see how the legacy she builds ultimately leads to the rise of the Mother of Dragons.
