“I have no wish to rule! No taste for duty! I’m not suited.” Aegon II Targaryen says it before the crown ever truly sinks its teeth into him. Then comes blood on stone, dragonfire over battlefields, mutilated bodies, dead children, and a throne that turns family into prey.

In House of the Dragon, Tom Glynn-Carney’s Aegon begins as a drunken, directionless prince and hardens into a ruler consumed by grief, rage and survival. His w** with Rhaenyra tears the Targaryen dynasty apart. Yet their feud is only one branch of a much larger family tree.

One that eventually leads all the way to Daenerys.

How Aegon II connects Rhaenyra and Daenerys

Aegon II and Rhaenyra are half-siblings. Both are children of King Viserys I Targaryen. Rhaenyra was born to Aemma Arryn, while Aegon was the firstborn son of Viserys and Alicent Hightower. Viserys kept Rhaenyra as his named heir even after Aegon’s birth, and that succession wound eventually split the family into the Blacks and Greens.

Daenerys sits much farther down the same bloodline. She does not descend from Aegon II. His legitimate line ends with his children. The Mother of Dragons instead descends from Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen through their son Viserys II. From there, the line runs through Aegon IV, Daeron II, Maekar I, Aegon V, Jaehaerys II and Aerys II before reaching Daenerys. Rhaenyra is Daenerys’ six-times-great-grandmother, while Aegon II is a distant collateral relative.

Aegon and Rhaenyra destroy dragons, armies and half their own family fighting over which branch should sit the Iron Throne. Generations later, the surviving royal line runs through Rhaenyra’s son Viserys II and ultimately produces Daenerys Stormborn.

That family connection makes the ending of the Dance especially meaningful, and HBO is now preparing to bring that bloody chapter to its conclusion.

House of the Dragon season 4 will end the dance

HBO has confirmed that Season 4 will be the final season of House of the Dragon, with the conclusion currently targeted for 2028. HBO renewed it in November 2025, and Casey Bloys later confirmed the plan to end the story there. That matches Ryan Condal’s four-season plan for the Dance.

Speaking on the Scriptnotes podcast in July 2026, Condal said that Season 4, has been written already, adding that HBO would receive the drafts during the summer. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2027 because the sets, locations, cast schedules and budget operate, in Condal’s words, like a “Jenga tower.”

No exact 2028 premiere date has been announced. The final stretch still has major pieces of Martin’s civil w** left to resolve, including the collapsing dragon population, the fate of the rival claimants, and the political wreckage left behind. HBO’s schedule places the final season in 2028, giving the series one last run to finish George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood civil-w** narrative.
