It has been recently reported that there was a coup led by Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford against George Lucas over creative differences on an Indiana Jones movie set. The Indian Jones movies are one of the marquee IPs of Lucasfilm that have found love from generations of fans. The iconic archaeologist cum adventurer character and the overarching film series were created by the visionary George Lucas alongside the Star Wars saga.

But his vision became the seed for a massive clash over the plot of an Indian Jones movie that forced Spielberg and Ford to go to loggerheads with Lucas.

The already controversial 2008 movie Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has unfolded yet another chapter of contention with the revelation of a creative rift between Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, and George Lucas. This comes from franchise producer Kathleen Kennedy through a Spielberg oral history by Vulture.

“They didn’t want to do a Raiders movie that involved aliens, and they kind of got into a fight with George about it,” Kennedy revealed.

Further in the Vulture story, she noted that both the actor and director were struggling with the film as the alien trope in a Raiders movie seemed a bit off to both of them, and they were not completely sold on that idea. So, obviously, they opposed creator George Lucas on the idea, who was lost in his own vision for the film.

“I wanted it to be kind of a War of the Worlds sort of thing," Lucas recalled. "Harrison said, ‘I’m not going to do another science-fiction movie.’ And Steven said, ‘I’m not going to do another science-fiction movie.’ I said, ‘Steven, this is perfect because it’s the 1950s, when flying saucers were a whole thing,’ but he said, ‘No,'" the filmmaker detailed. 

They apparently redid the script five times, Spielberg and Lucas reached a middle ground, and instead of aliens, they settled for outer-dimensional creatures. Still, Spielberg and Ford were not all into the final draft, and that is why Crystal Skull turned out to be the weakest of all the Indiana Jones films that Spielberg directed, according to Kennedy. And this is also why Ford was adamant about doing one more film after Crystal Skull, as he did not want it to be the conclusion to an epic franchise.

The question now shifts to how the Crystal Skull turned out to be and what the story was.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the fourth film in the franchise and series. It follows the adventurous archaeologist, Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr., played by Harrison Ford in 1957, as he battles the Soviet security and intelligence in the hunt for a telepathic crystal skull. The sequel, which debuted in May 2008 and made a healthy $786 million worldwide, received mixed reviews.

However, in an attempt to redeem his most iconic franchise, Ford made a comeback as Indiana Jones in Dial of Destiny in 2023, the only Indiana Jones film not to be helmed by Steven Spielberg. This continuation ended up being etched as the lowest performing in the franchise's history, receiving poor reviews, and making only $384 million at the global box office. It was directed by James Mangold. Ironically, the very Spielberg who seems to have fought tooth and anil for no sci-fi back in the day, today returns with another alien movie, Disclosure Day, years after Crystal Skull.
