The Indiana Jones franchise is one of the most popular adventure series and continues to intrigue fans even decades after its debut. And Raiders of the Lost Ark is regarded as one of the best in the franchise. However, even some of the greatest movies could not escape controversy, and Raiders of the Lost Ark is no exception.

The movie’s most debated aspect was even referenced in the hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory. The argument claims that the events of the film would have turned out in the same way even if Indiana Jones had never been involved. Unsurprisingly, the idea has divided fans, with some agreeing and others firmly rejecting it.

As the debate continues, here is whether there is any truth to the claim.

What is Raiders of the Lost Ark’s theory?

It turns out the logic mentioned in The Big Bang Theory, which is that Raiders of the Lost Ark would have turned out the same way even without Indiana Jones, may not be entirely accurate. A Reddit post argued that if Indiana Jones had been absent, Marion Ravenwood likely would not have survived. She may have died on the island by the end of the film.

Another point is that Indiana Jones ultimately found the Ark. Since Indiana Jones was involved, he helped prevent its further exploitation. These arguments challenge the idea that the story would have remained unchanged without his involvement.

Whether these differences are crucial remains to be debated among fans. Regardless, Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the most commercially successful films and continues to be one of the franchise's most beloved films, thanks in large part to Harrison Ford's memorable performance as Indiana Jones. And if there were plot holes, Harrison Ford may have addressed those just like he had with another Indiana Jones movie.

Ford had previously voiced concerns about Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Harrison Ford was not fond of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal plot

Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, and George Lucas argued over the ending of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. As per Vulture, producer Kathleen Kennedy shared that Spielberg and Ford were reluctant to make an Indiana Jones film that focused on aliens, while Lucas supported the idea because of the story's 1950s setting. The team eventually reached a compromise by changing the extraterrestrial concept into beings from another dimension.

Released in 2008, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull follows Indiana Jones as he battles Soviet KGB while searching for a mysterious crystal skull with telepathic powers. However, Ford reportedly did not want the fourth movie to be the end of the franchise. Kennedy added that this is the reason why Ford remained committed to returning for 2023's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, hoping it would serve as a better conclusion to the character's story after the Crystal Skull.
