How Did Homelander Die in 'The Boys' Comics? Who Defeated The Tyrannical Villain?

Few comic book villains have embodied unchecked power quite like Homelander. Across The Boys comic series, the twisted superhero served as the ultimate symbol of corruption, fear, and corporate manipulation. With his god-like abilities and terrifying lack of empathy, Homelander often appeared completely unstoppable, leaving readers wondering who, if anyone, could actually bring him down.
That question lingered throughout much of the comic’s run, especially as tensions between Homelander and Billy Butcher escalated toward an inevitable confrontation. Yet when the comic series finally delivered Homelander’s downfall, it avoided the predictable hero-versus-villain ending many fans expected, replacing it with a far darker and more shocking twist.

Homelander’s death in The Boys comics comes during the chaotic climax of the series, where he is brutally killed by Black Noir after launching a violent coup against the United States government. Believing himself untouchable, Homelander storms the White House and fully embraces the monstrous persona he had been spiraling toward for years. However, his downfall begins when the horrifying truth behind several crimes finally comes to light.
Black Noir is ultimately revealed to be a clone of Homelander, secretly created by Vought as a contingency plan in case the Supe leader ever became uncontrollable. Noir had been manipulating events from the shadows and framing Homelander for atrocities that pushed him deeper into madness.
Once the truth is exposed, the two engage in a savage fight that ends with Noir violently tearing Homelander apart in one of the comic’s most gruesome moments. Ironically, the seemingly unstoppable tyrant is not defeated by Billy Butcher or The Boys themselves, but by the corporation’s own backup weapon designed to replace him.
But even after Homelander’s death, the franchise continues finding new ways to raise the stakes around the character, especially in the television adaptation.
Could Homelander become truly immortal in The Boys season 5?
The live-action version of The Boys appears to be taking the character in a very different direction. In Season 5, Episode 6, Homelander reportedly injects himself with V1, an early and far more powerful version of Compound V that dramatically enhances abilities while also preventing aging. The serum previously helped Soldier Boy retain his strength for decades, making it one of the most dangerous substances introduced in the series.
The development creates a terrifying new problem for The Boys because the supe-k****** virus had been considered their final weapon against Homelander. With V1 allegedly making him immune to the virus while further amplifying his powers, Homelander effectively becomes closer to a “god” than ever before. Unlike the comics, where corporate manipulation eventually leads to his destruction, the television adaptation may be positioning him as an even more impossible threat heading into the franchise’s endgame.

Homelander’s comic death remains one of the most brutal and unexpected moments in The Boys comic series, largely because it strips away the illusion of his invincibility. Instead of falling in a heroic showdown, he becomes another disposable product of Vought’s twisted system. Meanwhile, the TV series seems determined to explore what happens when that same kind of power becomes even harder to stop.
