House of the Dragon has built its blood-soaked power struggle around one question: who truly deserves the Iron Throne? But beneath the dragons, betrayals, and shifting alliances lies another secret that refuses to stay buried: the true parentage of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s eldest son, Jacaerys Velaryon. As the prince’s legitimacy once again takes center stage, one question continues to divide fans across Westeros.
So, who is Jace’s real father, and how did a prince widely believed to be a bastard remain first in line to Rhaenyra’s claim?

Although officially introduced as Jacaerys Velaryon, the future prince is widely understood to be the biological son of Ser Harwin Strong, not Laenor Velaryon. Harwin first appeared in House of the Dragon Season 1, Episode 3 during the royal hunt before later becoming Lord Commander of the City Watch, where his close relationship with Rhaenyra Targaryen quietly evolved into a secret romance. During the ten-year time jump between Episodes 5 and 6, the pair’s relationship resulted in the births of Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey, whose unmistakable Strong features fueled endless rumors throughout King’s Landing.
Harwin’s story, however, ended almost as quickly as it began. After defending his sons during a confrontation with Ser Criston Cole, he returned to Harrenhal alongside his father, Lord Lyonel Strong, only for both men to perish in a fire secretly orchestrated by Harwin’s younger brother, Larys Strong. Even after his death, Harwin’s legacy continued to haunt Jace, whose growing awareness of his true parentage became one of the prince’s deepest internal conflicts.
But if everyone knew the truth about Jace’s birth, why did nobody challenge his place as Rhaenyra’s chosen heir?
Why didn’t Jace’s true parentage cost him the Iron Throne?
The question finally comes to the surface in House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 7, when Jace openly acknowledges that Harwin Strong is his real father. Speaking with Rhaenyra after the Sowing of the Seeds, he admits he had always believed claiming Vermax proved his noble blood and secured his place as the rightful successor to the Iron Throne. But after watching lowborn Targaryen bastards successfully bond with dragons like Vermithor and Silverwing, Jace begins to fear that his own legitimacy is no longer as unquestionable as he once believed.

Despite those fears, Jace’s legal claim never changes. Although his biological father is Harwin Strong, the crown officially recognizes him as the legitimate son of Laenor Velaryon and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, making him the undisputed heir to her claim under Westerosi law. It is a recurring truth throughout House of the Dragon that legitimacy is determined by recognition rather than blood alone, allowing Jacaerys Velaryon to remain Rhaenyra’s heir even as whispers about his true parentage continue to echo across the Seven Kingdoms.
Yet, as House of the Dragon continues pushing the Dance of the Dragons toward its devastating conclusion, questions surrounding his birth remain one of the saga’s most compelling political fault lines.
