Fire met fire as House of the Dragon season 3 lit up a stage almost as old as Westeros itself, opening the Taormina Film Festival with a fiery premiere in Sicily’s ancient Greek theater. The long-awaited new season, already one of 2026’s most anticipated TV events, was screened on a massive outdoor screen before 5,000 fans seated in stone tiers that date back to the 3rd century B.C.
The setting, framed by the looming presence of Mount Etna, gave the Targaryen saga a backdrop worthy of its dragons and dynasties.

The Taormina Film Festival's opening night centered on the debut episode of House of The Dragon season 3, which played under the open sky in Taormina’s famed theater as cast members Steve Toussaint, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, and Phoebe Campbell greeted the crowd (via Variety). The Italian premiere marked the first major stop on the show’s global promotional tour after its world premiere in London on June 8. The scale of the event reflected just how much anticipation surrounds the next chapter.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s South Europe managing director Alessandro Araimo explained that Taormina was chosen for its unique blend of history and spectacle. The combination of the series, the ancient venue, and Mount Etna created what he described as an “unbelievably amazing” tableau.
Beyond the premiere, the Taormina Film Festival continues to attract major names from across the industry. Helen Mirren, Russell Crowe, Gore Verbinski, and Fernanda Torres are among those expected to attend. The festival’s location is also familiar to audiences as the setting of The White Lotus season 2, further cementing its cultural relevance.
From a grand premiere to an even grander runtime, the spotlight now shifts to how season 3 begins its story.
A supersized return sets the stage for war for House of the Dragon
Season 3 of House of the Dragon is coming in hot, and now there are concrete details about how the new chapter begins. The premiere will not be a quick return to Westeros but a feature-length plunge back into the Targaryen civil war. After two years of buildup, the opening episode is designed to feel like a major event.

The premiere is scheduled to air on HBO on June 21, 2026, with a runtime of 72 minutes. That extended length gives it the scale of a small film rather than a standard episode. Reports confirm that the episode opens with the Battle of the Gullet. This massive naval clash is a pivotal moment in the Dance of the Dragons.
The new season will consist of eight episodes, maintaining the tighter format used previously. The finale is expected in early August, keeping the narrative focused and intense. Season 2 averaged around 25 million viewers per episode across platforms, setting a high bar for what comes next.
