A teaser trailer showcasing the several ways the third season of HBO's House of the Dragon, which premieres on June 21, will be larger and badder than anything that has come before it aired just before the actors and creators of the show sat down for a much-anticipated Friday night panel at SXSW London.
“This sequence I will confidently say is unlike anything that’s ever been done in television before,” said showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal.
Readers of the book might have guessed till now that he is referring to The Battle of the Gullet, a monumental and horrifyingly terrible conflict that takes place on land and at sea and serves as the focal point of the Targaryen civil war in House of the Dragon, which takes place roughly 200 years before the events of the Game of Thrones.
This moment, which even fictional historians would consider to be the bloodiest naval combat in Westerosi history, has been the focus of the entire series. It is finally ready to be showcased on the screen, and it will be interesting to see if The Battle of the Gullet will be able to fully live up to its hype - something around which the makers have marketed the whole series.
The curiosity around the battle now warrants more information on the entire event, and here it is.
The background of the battle
Crucially, Rhaenyra's dragon riders attack King's Landing from the air while Lord Corlys Velaryon, also known as "The Sea Snake," uses his powerful fleet to block The Gullet, a narrow stretch of water, thereby cutting off King's Landing from trade, food supplies, and the rest of the world.

However, the pirate-like Admiral Sharako Lohar, who became Tyland Lannister's sworn ally after he defeated her in mud wrestling at the conclusion of season two, is leading King Aegon II's supporters in securing their own fleet. In addition, she despises The Sea Snake and is driven to destroy his fleet in order to take control of the high seas. The mines are laid, and now all it needs is to set off the fuse, which will only happen when House of the Dragon releases on June 21.
