Corlys Velaryon has been one of House of the Dragon’s most emotionally layered figures, and season 3 has made him even more central by tying his grief, ambition, and legacy to the wider war. After losing Rhaenys and finally acknowledging Alyn and Addam as his sons, he becomes a man trying to secure the future of House Velaryon before time runs out.

By the end of episode 6, the question hanging over him is simple but urgent: is the Sea Snake still alive?

Episode 6 of House of the Dragon builds Corlys’ story through quiet frustration rather than spectacle. He is still dealing with the fallout of the Triarchy raids, the damage at High Tide, and his growing resentment over Rhaenyra’s refusal to legitimize Alyn and Addam. That refusal clearly wounds him, especially because he has already come to accept them as his heirs. 

The ending then shifts into dangerous territory. After Rhaenyra sends a warning of her own, Corlys gives a speech to his soldiers and admits he has been away from the city too long. Moments later, he spots a stranger, is grabbed from behind, and appears to be strangled as enemies swarm around him. The scene is filmed in a way that deliberately keeps the outcome uncertain, which makes it feel even more ominous.

Still, the ambiguity matters. The show never shows Corlys being clearly stabbed or definitively killed, and Fire & Blood leaves room for interpretation because it is framed as a layered historical account rather than a single version of events. Since Corlys has already survived multiple close calls this season and still has a significant role left in the Dance of the Dragons, the most likely answer is that he is not dead.

But Corlys is not the only fate hanging in the balance as another major loss looms over the war.

Sunfyre’s fate matters because the dragon is more than just a creature; he represents Aegon II’s claim, his pride, and the fragile authority he is trying to hold onto. House of the Dragon Season 3 ties the dragon’s condition closely to Aegon’s emotional state, making Sunfyre’s apparent death feel like a serious blow to the Green faction. If he is truly gone, the balance of power shifts in a meaningful way.

The series has already played with that uncertainty. In episode 3, Daemon relays that Baela saw Sunfyre as long dead and decaying, which suggested the dragon had finally succumbed to injuries from Rook’s Rest. Yet episode 4 complicates that idea, with Aegon returning to the site, finding what remains of Sunfyre, and insisting the dragon is still alive while taking a golden scale as a keepsake. 

For now, the safest reading is that the show is intentionally leaving Sunfyre’s fate unresolved. Whether alive or on the brink, the uncertainty adds weight to Aegon’s arc and keeps the conflict volatile as both sides edge toward even darker turns.
