Now, the battle intensifies, but before America sees it, Season 3 will premiere first in Italy at Taormina Film Festival.

According to a Variety exclusive, HBO has confirmed that House of the Dragon Season 3 will open Italy’s prestigious Taormina Film Festival. The premiere will feature cast members Steve Toussaint, Bethany Antonia, Harry Collett, and Phoebe Campbell's presence at the screening. The first episode will be showcased in Taormina’s ancient Greek amphitheater, with Sicily’s Mount Etna providing a dramatic natural backdrop.

The festival runs from June 10 to June 14, placing the global debut ahead of its U.S. rollout. The series will then premiere in the United States on June 21 at 9 p.m. ET, followed by a June 22 release in Italy. The eight-episode season will continue weekly, building toward its finale in August.

Festival marketing chief Tiziana Rocca described the show as one of the most spectacular productions in the global television landscape. Season 3 is expected to deepen that conflict, pushing Westeros closer to irreversible destruction. The choice to debut the season in such a historic venue reflects the show’s cinematic ambition and global appeal.

And while the scale of war grows, the language of the Targaryens will play an even more powerful role in shaping the drama.

Matt Smith has revealed that Season 3 of House of the Dragon will feature significantly more High Valyrian, the ancient language tied to House Targaryen. Speaking at the Omlette Stage at CCXP MX 2026, he explained that the language is complex and difficult to master. Despite that challenge, he confirmed audiences will hear much more of it in the upcoming season.

"But there’s a lot of that this year. We’ve got a lot of High Valyrian. I can tell you that," Smith said.

Smith is widely regarded as one of the most convincing speakers of High Valyrian in the franchise. In interviews, he has noted that using the language helps him tap into a more instinctive and authentic side of Daemon Targaryen. It allows him to explore emotional layers that feel distinct from standard dialogue.

High Valyrian also functions as a marker of power and legitimacy within the story. Characters who struggle with it, like Aegon II, appear less authoritative, while fluent speakers reinforce their noble identity. As the war escalates, the language is expected to dominate key confrontations and strategic exchanges.
