The showrunner recently teased the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, widely regarded as one of the bloodiest and most devastating conflicts in George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood. House of the Dragon season 3 is set to premiere on June 21, 2026, and Ryan Condal is already warning fans to brace for what could be the series' most jaw-dropping spectacle yet. Speaking at the ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas, the showrunner hyped the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet as "arguably the craziest episode of television ever made." He also described the clash as the defining turning point of the Dance of the Dragons, revealing that the team was determined to bring the legendary battle to screens "in all its glory."

“This is the defining turning point of this war - of the Dance of the Dragons…We had to find a way to honor it, put in on television, in all its glory.” Condal at ATX TV Festival.

That same ambition is exactly why viewers never saw the battle in Season 2. Originally planned for the previous season, the massive sequence was pushed back so the production could secure the time, budget, and resources needed to do it properly. Condal even compared skipping the Gullet to making The Lord of the Rings without Helm's Deep, explaining that the battle demanded dragons, warships, and multiple battlefronts colliding at once.

But dragons alone are not the only thing expanding in Season 3, as the war is about to pull even more major players into the conflict.

Familiar faces return as new warriors enter the Dragon world

Season 3 will see the return of the franchise's biggest names, including Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Ewan Mitchell as Aymond Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II and Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole. At the same time, the expanding war will introduce several major figures from George R.R. Martin's lore, with James Norton joining as Ormund Hightower, Tommy Flanagan as Roderick Dustin, Dan Fogler as Torrhen Manderly, Annie Shapero as Black Aly Blackwood, and Tom Cullen as Luthor Largent. Together, they are set to widen the battlefield far beyond King's Landing and Dragonstone.

Remarkably, House of the Dragon managed to dominate viewership even without delivering the Battle of the Gullet in Season 2. The series averaged around 25 million viewers across platforms, while the finale drew 8.9 million viewers and delivered the biggest streaming day in Max history. Yet the season ended not with a battle, but with explosive political twists, and Daemon finally bending the knee to Rhaenyra after a haunting vision of Esteros' future. Now, with every major faction marching toward war, Season 3 looks ready to cash in on all that anticipation.

Thus, if Ryan Condal's promises are any indication, the Battle of the Gullet may not just define Season 3; it could become the moment that reshapes the entire House of the Dragon.
