Mike Flanagan has had the opportunity to work with Stephen King multiple times throughout his career, taking on some of the author’s most challenging and ambitious stories and psychological thrillers. Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and The Life of Chuck are among the gems the director has successfully brought to life on screen. He has proven time and again that he understands the heart of King’s storytelling. So, who better than Flanagan to bring yet another of King’s classics back to life?

The director could once again be delving deep into King’s eerie world as he is set to reimagine a hit movie from 2007.

Mike Flanagan is set to reunite with Stephen King to adapt The Mist to bring back the world of terrors and King’s brilliant reflection on human behaviour. This story is from the author’s short story collection Skeleton Crew for Warner Bros. As per Deadline, Flanagan will direct and write the screenplay for the film adaptation. 

Now, this is not the first adaptation of The Mist. The 2007 film, directed by Frank Darabont, had memorable performances from Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden. The novella was later reimagined as a 10-episode television series of the same name, starring Morgan Spector and Alyssa Sutherland. With two adaptations already in the memory, the upcoming version will need to have a distinct identity of its own.

And safe to say that Warner Bros. appears to have entrusted that challenge to a seasoned hand, as reported by Deadline. He is currently developing the adaptation of King’s first published novel, Carrie, as a miniseries for Prime Video.

Until any of the new series makes its way to the screen, fans can meanwhile revisit some of the most underrated adaptations of Stephen King’s finest novels. One of them was a big hit on Netflix.

11.22.63, based on Stephen King’s acclaimed time-travel novel, did not have as much buzz as expected during its run on Hulu. However, the series found new life after moving to a new home. After its addition to Netflix, it quickly climbed into the Top 10 charts and pulled in new viewers. 

Starring James Franco and Sarah Gadon, the story follows high school teacher Jake Epping, who could time travel only to 1960 and is tasked with preventing the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. As time itself begins to push back, he faces obstacles that threaten his mission. It is one of King’s most compelling screen adaptations and a must-watch. 

And with new Stephen King projects already in development, it may only be a matter of time before another of his unforgettable stories arrives on screen again.
