People are no strangers to the famous Hooters and its chicken wings. The dining chain has become popular since its inception and has expanded to more than 100 locations across the nation. Many have dined at the restaurant, but not many are aware of the story of how one of the most iconic dining places was created.

While there were business strategies and plans behind the creation of the restaurant, there is also a heartwarming story about two friends who were present during the beginning of the chain. This unexpected story about the founders is now in development for the first time and could make it to the big screen, too. 

As Deadline reported, the origin story of the famous chicken-wing chain Hooters is being adapted into a movie titled Hooters: The Movie. Interestingly, the movie is being independently produced by the chain’s original founding partners. Moreover, the founders are also heavily involved in the film, including Hooters cofounder Ed Droste, who co-wrote the film alongside Phil Olson and Chuck Melcher.

“I think people are going to enjoy watching how we were really just some guys who didn’t know what we were doing, but had a great time doing it,” Droste said. 

Droste also hinted that the film will include plenty of drama as well as emotional and wholesome moments, as per Deadline. Fhe film is based on the real events behind Hooters’ founding and promises to be one of the best rom-com movies. The story follows two friends, Ted and Lenny, from a small town in Iowa as Ted becomes fascinated with Diane after seeing her in a spring break commercial. However, to meet her, Ted urges Lenny to join him on a road trip to Clearwater Beach, FL, to find Diane.

This comes just days after Hooters CEO Neil Kiefer told People that the chain will be rebranding itself as a neighborhood place. He has been part of the chain since 1983, first serving as the chain’s attorney before becoming CEO in 1992. Kiefer shared that after private equity firms took over some of the locations, they had moved away from the concept the chain originally stood for. Now, the brand will focus on re-establishing itself.

“It’s a neighborhood place that many families frequent, and singles and couples,” he said.

At the same time, the founders will also keep their eyes on the film's production, while handing the reins to an Emmy-nominated filmmaker.

As per Deadline, Hooters: The Movie will be directed by Jon Rosenbaum. The director is known for his work on films like Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp and Benchwarmers 2: Breaking Balls. The director spoke highly of the film and its concept and added that he was impressed by the story.

“It’s not at all what people will be expecting – and it’s mostly true! I can’t wait to bring this story to life,” he said.

Meanwhile, casting directors Lisa London and Catherine Stroud are looking for the right actors to lead the film. Production on the movie is expected to begin in November in the Tampa/Clearwater area, where the original Hooters restaurant was opened. While the founders’ journey seems to have panned out well, much more detail can be found when the movie arrives on the big screen.
