Paramount may have won the bid against Netflix to acquire Warner Bros., but the deal is far from finalized as workers come forward with concerns about how the merger might act as the final blow to the American industry. Concerns over the merger and the future of the entertainment industry reached a boiling point during a recent gathering of notable names of Hollywood. Earlier in April of this year, Paramount had secured shareholder approval for the acquisition of Warner Bros.
Despite the approval to finalize the deal, several critics have continued to call for it to be halted.

Several writers, actors, crew members, and small business owners at the Main St. vs. The Merger town hall at Beverly Hills' Lumiere Cinema have voiced opposition to the proposed $111 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros., as per The Hollywood Reporter. They cited concerns over potential job losses, reduced competition, and fewer opportunities across the entertainment industry. Many fear that one major Hollywood studio absorbing another could create major challenges for an industry that has already struggled previously with the pandemic and industry strikes.
Many attendees at the meeting also opened up about their personal struggles and concerns about the future of the industry. However, not everyone opposed the deal. Some argued that the merger could strengthen both companies and provide consumers with more choices.
Supporters also suggested that a combined Paramount and Warner Bros. would be better positioned to compete with streaming giants such as Netflix. Meanwhile, according to Reuters, the attorneys general of California, New York, and several other states are preparing a lawsuit to block the merger. The development follows an earlier pledge by California Attorney General Rob Bonta to examine the deal.
Moreover, five streaming subscribers has also recently filed a federal lawsuit challenging the proposed merger.
Paramount seeks dismissal of lawsuit challenging merger
Five streaming subscribers filed a federal lawsuit back in April to stop Paramount Skydance's proposed $111 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. They claim the deal could reduce competition, lead to higher subscription prices, and give viewers fewer entertainment choices. Later, on June 3, 2026, Paramount asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the claims have no factual basis, as per Variety.
“This clumsy attempt to politicize antitrust litigation, untethered to any established antitrust principles or law, has no place in this courthouse and must be rejected,” the company’s filing reportedly said.

The company said the merger would strengthen Hollywood and help it compete more effectively in the streaming market. The deal, with both its advantages and disadvantages, has continued to be debated. And considering the recent meeting, it does not seem to be ending anytime soon.
