Understandably, every studio executive is eager to get into business with Curry Barker. The new favorite horror director was reportedly offered millions of dollars for his next movie before he had even pitched a story or idea. That does not come as a surprise, considering Barker’s recent film, Obsession, which is pulling in impressive box office numbers.

Made on a modest budget of just $750,000, the film has already earned millions. So, its unexpected success has sparked curiosity across Hollywood about what Barker could achieve with a much larger budget, seemingly pushing studios to compete for the filmmaker with lucrative offers. And the latest is an eight-figure deal.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, one studio attempted to offer Curry Barker a $10 million deal for his next original project without even seeing his idea or pitch for a new original. However, the eager studio ultimately had to back off after learning about the condition that links Barker’s next project to Universal Pictures. Before Obsession was released by Focus Features, its producers, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, already had a deal with Universal Pictures that now gives them the first chance to negotiate for Barker’s next original movie.

Interestingly, another studio is also reportedly hoping to work with Barker. Now, if Universal Pictures and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster decide to step back, the director could end up joining forces with one of these studios or perhaps another studio willing to make a better offer. Although there have been no official negotiations or confirmed offers yet, The Hollywood Reporter reports that a bidding war for Barker’s next movie could reportedly climb as high as $20 million.

Meanwhile, Barker's Obsession has continued to enjoy immense success, earning $23.9 million in its second weekend. After bringing in $17.1 million during its opening weekend, the film has now grossed $62.3 million domestically. Previously, the movie was acquired by Focus Features for $15 million at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film follows two fake paranormal investigators who are forced to confront real ghosts while running their fraudulent business. Now, even before Obsession became a box office success, Focus Features had already backed Barker's project, which is being produced by Blumhouse Productions, Atomic Monster, Spooky Pictures, and Divide/Conquer. The movie is expected to receive a theatrical release, although the release date has yet to be confirmed.
