Hollywood wants more books for adaptation, and that too before everyone can get their hands on them. The film industry has always turned to books for inspiration, whether for period pieces or futuristic stories. This approach has seen plenty of successful book adaptations that have caught the attention of both avid readers and audiences who may not be as interested in reading.

The trend has become more popular than ever in this era, with the success of films like Dune. However, as their popularity has grown over the years, the adaptation market has also undergone a shift. The Venice Film Festival shared a glimpse into how the adaptation market is changing.

The Venice Film Festival hosted the Book Adaptation Rights Market as part of the Venice Production Bridge from September 4 to 6, 2026. And as per Observer, publishers and agents at the event could pitch their entire catalogs to film and television producers. This means producers will also get the opportunity to consider unpublished books as well as new releases, which include novels, biographies, and much more. 

This hints at a shift in the industry, allowing the screen rights to a book to be discussed even before it is published and readers have a chance to discover it. The coordinator of the Venice Production Bridge and curator of the Book Adaptation Rights Market, Chiara Marin, told the outlet that publishers and television producers previously approached the market differently. While publishers focused on readers, producers primarily analyzed how much an adaptation would cost.

However, producers have changed their approach and are now looking for good stories while placing less emphasis on the initial cost of adaptation. Another factor they consider is whether a book is adaptable and has enough material to support multiple seasons. One shining example is British journalist Marie-Claire Chappet's debut novel, Broken Toys, whose screen rights have been acquired by A24 and Lookout Point even though the book is set to be published in 2027.

With Hollywood's appetite for book adaptations growing, several highly anticipated titles are also making their way from page to screen in the next few years

One of the most highly anticipated book adaptations is Off Campus Season 2. The first season of the series follows the romance between Hannah Wells and hockey team captain Garrett Graham at Briar University. Season 2 will focus on Dean and Allie and could arrive in early 2027.

Following the success of the series and the conclusion of The Summer I Turned Pretty, the beloved characters are set to return for a cinematic treat. As per the rumors, the movie could arrive in theaters in 2027. Another highly anticipated adaptation is The Love Hypothesis, starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman.

The movie is set to be released on September 23, 2026. Now, these are just two of the many rom-com and thriller book adaptations set to arrive this year, alongside several period dramas. And this certainly shows the growing impact of book adaptations and their demand in Hollywood.
