Hollywood has officially entered its comeback era. After years of pandemic-era uncertainty, shifting audience habits, and questions about the future of theatrical releases, the box office has delivered a very loud answer: Hollywood is back. Summer 2026 has become the biggest summer in domestic box office history, proving that audiences are still more than willing to leave their couches when the right movies hit the big screen.

From Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey to Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a wave of blockbuster releases has helped Hollywood turn the summer movie season into a billion-dollar celebration. The numbers are particularly striking because the industry didn't just have one huge month every month from May through August crossed the $1 billion mark.

The numbers tell a remarkable comeback story. Every month from May through August crossed the $1 billion domestic mark, with August itself setting a new monthly record at roughly $1.27 billion (via Deadline). Universal led the studio race with approximately $1.23 billion, followed by Disney at around $1.03 billion and Sony at roughly $1.01 billion. Meanwhile, Lionsgate, A24, Warner Bros., and Paramount also contributed substantial sums to the season’s blockbuster haul.

Much of that momentum came from major theatrical events. (via DeadlineSpider-Man: Brand New Day emerged as the summer's biggest domestic performer, while Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey added another massive dose of spectacle. Other titles, including Toy Story 5, Obsession, Michael, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and Backrooms, helped keep audiences coming back.

If The Odyssey's domestic and global success is any indication, Nolan's epic still has plenty of gas in the tank.

The Odyssey eyes a huge China opening with strong presales

As Hollywood celebrates its record-breaking summer, The Odyssey is taking its momentum overseas, with China emerging as a major box-office battleground. Christopher Nolan's Universal epic is rolling out across mainland China, opening on more than 20,000 screens, including about 90% of the country's nearly 800 IMAX venues.

According to Variety, presales reached RMB39.5 million ($5.9 million) by August 12, while combined preview and presale earnings climbed to RMB91 million ($13.5 million). Maoyan Pro projected an opening-day gross of around RMB70.4 million ($10.4 million), with the film expected to retain its planned IMAX allocation.

Christopher Nolan also traveled to China alongside producer Emma Thomas and stars Matt Damon and Charlize Theron for an extensive promotional tour. The film's July 30 premiere at the China National Film Museum drew around 500 fans and media representatives, while related hashtags quickly trended on Weibo. The buzz comes as The Odyssey continues its impressive global run, having already crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide.

The $4.76 billion summer record is not inflation-adjusted, and 2013's figure would be considerably higher in today's dollars. Still, the 2026 season represents a significant post-pandemic rebound, driven by both established franchises and unexpected crowd-pleasers. With audiences once again showing up for the big-screen experience, Hollywood's comeback may have finally earned its standing ovation.
