Jeffrey Dean Morgan is not letting Zack Snyder catch a breath, following him persistently to get a role in Escape From New York. John Carpenter’s 1981 cult classic Escape from New York remains one of science fiction cinema’s defining works, transforming Manhattan into a grim maximum-security prison and introducing the unforgettable antihero Snake Plissken. Its influence continues to echo through decades of films, games, and television.

When Zack Snyder announced plans to reimagine the property, fans immediately began speculating about casting choices and Snyder’s signature visual style. And with Morgan's constant campaigning for the role, it seems he might just get it.  

Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Zack Snyder revealed that Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been persistently reaching out about the planned Escape from New York remake.

“He literally has been hitting me up,” Snyder said, laughing about Morgan’s enthusiasm and determination. The director stopped short of confirming a role but made it clear that he appreciates the actor’s interest and longstanding support.

Snyder spoke warmly about Morgan during the conversation, adding.

“He’s the best. I love him. He’s great.” Their professional relationship spans many years and includes several projects that never made it to the screen. One of the most notable was the filmmaker’s planned Flashpoint adaptation, where Morgan was expected to play Thomas Wayne’s Batman in an alternate DC timeline.

Morgan briefly appeared as Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and later returned through archival material in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Fans long imagined what his darker version of Batman might look like, especially after reports emerged that costume tests took place during the early development of Flashpoint.

Snyder’s future plans extend beyond dystopian thrillers, with one famous comic book story still occupying a special place in his imagination.

Zack Snyder has repeatedly stated that Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns remains the one superhero project he would eagerly direct, provided it exists outside the continuity of the current DC Universe. The filmmaker views Miller’s graphic novel as a landmark work that explores aging, legacy, and the darker side of heroism.

Snyder has often compared The Dark Knight Returns to Watchmen, seeing both as stories that challenge the conventions of the superhero genre. He believes audiences experiencing fatigue with traditional comic book narratives may connect with Miller’s vision because it was originally created during a similar moment in comic book history.

Reports from industry insiders have suggested that Snyder’s ideas for the project are already extensively developed, with storyboards and visual concepts prepared. The director recently appeared alongside Frank Miller at a public event in Los Angeles, where he again expressed interest in bringing the story to life if the opportunity ever emerges.
