It is a great time to be a fan of video game franchises, particularly with Hollywood turning to popular gaming titles for live-action adaptations. From Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty to The Legend of Zelda, the list of video games inspiring movies continues to grow. Meanwhile, fans also witnessed an exciting wave of video game adaptations this year, with Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil and Street Fighter.

Now, another popular video game is getting a live-action adaptation. This time, it is a famous indie horror game, Mouthwashing. And the film has reportedly landed with the filmmaker who previously helmed Jennifer’s Body.

Mouthwashing is set to get a live-action adaptation

Mouthwashing, a video game developed by Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex, was released for PC in 2024 and has become a hit among fans. Now, Wrong Organ and Sony Pictures’ production company Screen Gems have announced that the game is set to receive a live-action adaptation, with famed director Karyn Kusama attached to direct the project.

Kusama is best known for her work on Jennifer’s Body, which has since become a cult classic, as well as the popular television series Yellowjackets. The screenplay will be written by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay. Scott Derrickson, best known for directing The Black Phone, will join C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng to produce the film under their production company, Crooked Highway.

For those unfamiliar with the psychological horror video game, Mouthwashing follows a five-member crew on the freight spaceship Tulpar, who are left stranded after the vessel collides with an asteroid. With dwindling resources and no clear way out, the crew is left to struggle to survive as they face difficult circumstances and terrifying hallucinations. However, details about the film's plot have not yet been revealed.

Now, this is not the only video game making it to the screen.

PUBG is getting live-action adaptation treatment

A video game live-action adaptation is also in the works at Netflix. The streaming platform is set to turn PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) into a live-action film, with the task handed to Donald Glover. He is set to write, executive produce, and star in the project, which is his first collaboration with Netflix.

His brother, Stephen Glover, will also join him to work on the script and serve as an executive producer on the live-action adaptation. Neon TV’s Michael Schaefer, Gilga’s Fam Udeorji, Krafton’s entertainment company, LV3H’s Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee are also producers on the project. The future of video game adaptations in Hollywood looks quite interesting, as more and more projects continue to garner attention.
