Some on-screen brotherly chemistry comes with a little off-screen turbulence, and Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy certainly had both. The duo played brothers Jack and Forrest Bondurant in John Hillcoat’s 2012 crime drama Lawless, bringing an intense, volatile dynamic to the screen. However, their convincing chemistry reportedly came with a real-life squabble, with Tom Hardy claiming that LaBeouf knocked him out during an altercation. While LaBeouf later dismissed the incident as a mistake, the conflicting accounts turned the story into one of Hollywood’s curious mysteries.

Now, with the infamous altercation still making for quite a Hollywood story, here is another look at the rivalry between the two co-stars.

Tom Hardy on fight with Shia LeBeouf

The mystery surrounding Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy’s infamous Lawless altercation has only become more entertaining with time, largely because nobody seems to agree on what actually happened. When Den of Geek spoke to Hardy in a 2011 interview about reports that his co-star had knocked him unconscious, the actor had quite the frightening account to share.

“He knocked me out sparko. Out cold. He’s a bad, bad boy. He is. He’s quite intimidating as well. He’s a scary dude,” he said.

LaBeouf, however, offered a rather different version of events during an appearance on Hot Ones more than seven years ago, insisting that Hardy tells the knockout story as a joke. According to the actor, the two frequently messed with each other on set, and one particular incident involved Hardy barging into a room while LaBeouf was n**** with his girlfriend.

The Mad Max: Fury Road star allegedly grabbed him and began wrestling, only to fall a flight of stairs and knock himself unconscious. If that sounds like an unusually elaborate explanation for a Hollywood feud, Lawless director John Hillcoat had another account to add to the mix. During a Reddit AMA, Hillcoat denied that LaBeouf knocked Hardy out but confirmed that the co-stars did get into a physical altercation, like Hardy had told Den of Geek, which escalated until others had to intervene and restrain them.

The LaBeouf-Hardy feud, unlike his rumored clashes with his MobLand season 2 co-stars, barely scratches the surface of Shia LaBeouf’s Hollywood beefs, as his Charlize Theron encounter proves.

Tom Hardy's clash with Charlie Theron

Tom Hardy’s clash with Charlize Theron on Mad Max: Fury Road was hardly the sort of co-star drama that could be brushed aside between takes. During the gruelling Namibian desert shoot, the actors reportedly struggled with their contrasting working styles, as Theron valued punctuality and precision while Hardy developed a reputation for arriving late. Their growing frustration eventually boiled over into a heated confrontation.

The breaking point reportedly came when Hardy arrived three hours late for a scene, leaving Theron waiting inside the War Rig in full costume. The actress confronted him, sparking a screaming match, and later admitted that she requested a female producer accompany her on set because she felt uncomfortable around Hardy. Although the two eventually reconciled, the incident remains another memorable chapter in Hardy’s history of co-star clashes.
