Based on Disney’s recent theatrical-to-home-release patterns, a digital rental or purchase could arrive in early to mid-September, while a Disney+ debut could follow around mid-to-late October. These windows remain estimates and could shift depending on the film’s theatrical performance. Fans should therefore wait for Disney’s official confirmation before marking a date on their calendars.
For now, fans looking to revisit the world of Motunui will have to wait for an official announcement. But the movie’s reception has already given audiences plenty to talk about.
Dwayne Johnson opens up about the movie’s mixed reception
Speaking about the film's reception, Dwayne Johnson recalled how early reviews initially appeared encouraging before the conversation shifted in a different direction. Laughing about the situation, he acknowledged that not every project lands the way filmmakers hope when working in the entertainment industry.
The Golden Globe nominee told PEOPLE that the Disney movie’s negative reviews, which currently sit at 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, are “just the way it goes” in the entertainment industry. He emphasized that what “really mattered” was that “the culture really stood up” in the Polynesian-inspired tale.
“Our first two reviews came out. I’ll never forget it… They were amazing. I was like, wow,” he said, adding that the reviews then “went another way, as sometimes happens.”

Despite the criticism, Dwayne Johnson suggested that the team was more focused on the movie’s lasting impact than opening-weekend reactions. For Johnson, the most meaningful response came from Polynesian audiences who saw their culture represented on screen. He explained that seeing children connect with the story and its cultural roots ultimately mattered more than review scores or online discourse.

“That’s just the way it goes because we’re in this business,” Johnson added to PEOPLE.
While an official digital or Disney+ date has not been confirmed, fans can expect more information from Disney in the coming weeks. Until then, the live-action adventure remains a theatrical-only experience for audiences eager to see Moana’s latest voyage. A confirmed home-release date will likely clarify when viewers can finally stream or purchase the film.
