Heated Rivalry did not simply arrive on television, it arrived like a puck through glass. The hockey romance turned Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov into an internet obsession, with every glance, rivalry and hard-earned confession feeding a fandom that kept growing long after the credits rolled. Now, that cultural heat has translated into one of television criticism’s biggest prizes.
What began as a secret romance between two rival hockey stars has now become something much bigger, and the TCA voters have officially put Heated Rivalry in the winner’s circle.
Heated Rivalry takes the TCA crown
The Television Critics Association has crowned Heated Rivalry its Program of the Year, giving the Crave and HBO Max series the marquee victory at the 42nd annual TCA Awards. The win feels particularly significant because the show was not built like conventional awards bait. It is a Canadian hockey romance adapted from Rachel Reid’s novels, powered by the chemistry between Connor Storrie’s Ilya Rozanov and Hudson Williams’ Shane Hollander, yet it managed to break through the noise surrounding much bigger prestige television.

The competition was formidable. Heated Rivalry faced The Comeback, Hacks, Industry, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, last year’s winner The Pitt, Pluribus, Shrinking and Widow’s Bay. The series had entered the race tied for the most nominations with Industry and Widow’s Bay, five apiece, while Hacks, The Pitt and Pluribus each had four. What makes the victory more satisfying is that Heated Rivalry had already become the kind of show critics could not stop dissecting: a sports romance where the hockey is important, but the real game is played through secrecy.
And then there is the other half of the TCA story, because one show left the ceremony with an even bigger trophy haul.
Widow’s Bay was the night’s biggest winner
Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay emerged as the biggest winner of the 2026 TCA Awards, collecting three awards. The horror comedy won Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, Outstanding New Program and Individual Achievement in Comedy for Kate O’Flynn. That sweep is especially impressive considering how quickly the series became a critical contender.

Katie Dippold’s genre-bending show had already secured five nominations, tying Heated Rivalry and Industry for the nomination lead. Its other acting nomination went to Matthew Rhys, while its blend of supernatural unease and comedy gave critics something very different from the prestige dramas dominating much of the television conversation. The result is a fascinating awards-night split: Heated Rivalry took the crown for Program of the Year, while Widow’s Bay proved itself the evening’s most decorated series.
For Heated Rivalry, however, the TCA victory adds another serious chapter to an already extraordinary breakout. The show has gone from a hockey romance adaptation to genuine television phenomenon, and the critics have now given that phenomenon their highest seal of approval.
