Bringing a modern crime classic like Heat to life a quarter-century later was always going to be an intimidating task for director Michael Mann. Following the massive cultural footprint left by his 1995 masterpiece - which famously paired Robert De Niro and Al Pacino on screen for the very first time - adapting his and Meg Gardiner's sprawling 2022 novel presented a monumental casting and narrative hurdle. 

The story functions as both a prequel and a sequel, seamlessly shuttling across timelines from the late 1980s and the immediate aftermath of the original film into the early 2000s. Therefore, assembling the right ensemble requires finding actors capable of embodying younger and older iterations of legendary characters originally made iconic by De Niro, Pacino, and Val Kilmer.

While some of the main cast have already been locked, the movie has now tapped Emmy winner Stephen Graham in a key role.

Variety has exclusively reported that Stephen Graham has formally joined the cast of Michael Mann's eagerly anticipated follow-up, Heat 2. The Emmy-winning Adolescence star and legendary British actor, Stephen Graham, would co-star with Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Adam Driver, Jason Clarke, and Odessa Young in the Amazon MGM Studios film if other rumored agreements are finalized.

Graham is reportedly playing a younger version of master thief Neil McCauley, who was portrayed by Robert De Niro in the 1995 original, however, roles have not been confirmed yet. Bale is apparently slated to play Al Pacino's part, LAPD detective Vincent Hanna, while DiCaprio is anticipated to play Chris Shiherlis, McCauley's right-hand man which was played by Val Kilmer in the original film.

Mann, Jerry Bruckheimer of Jerry Bruckheimer Films, and Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt of UA are among the producers of Heat 2. Shane Salerno and Eric Roth will serve as executive producers. The script for Mann and Meg Gardiner's New York Times bestselling novel was written by Mann per the Variety report.

Heat 2 by Michael Mann follows an epic detective-criminal chase that gave audiences a direct face-off between Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino for the very first time.

Michael Mann wrote and directed the original Heat, which followed McCauley as he pursued a last score while investigator Hanna closed in. Mann and Art Linson produced the film. Coming from big studios like Warner Bros. and New Regency, the movie went on to make approximately $187 million at the global box office, which would be close to $400 million if it were released today. 

Heat 2 gives Stephen Graham's already impressive resume even more gloss. The actor, writer, and producer, who produced the Disney+ series A Thousand Blows through his Matriarch Productions and Netflix's smash hit Adolescence, is currently in Venice for the premiere of Florian Zeller's Bunker, in which he stars alongside Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem. He will soon be seen in the Apple TV series Nocturne, which premieres in October.
