Cinema in 2026 is having a rather delicious plot twist: bigger spectacles, smaller budgets, and moviegoers rediscovering the magic of a packed theater. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is banking on IMAX grandeur, while independent filmmakers are proving that a modest budget need not mean modest ambition. Between technical democratization and a box office resurgence, the industry is finding fresh ways to make movie magic.

And Head Gear Films, the UK media financier, appears to have spotted an opportunity in America’s indie film and television scene, with $120 million earmarked for its first year.

Head Gear Films is bringing serious money to America’s independent film scene, and it has a very particular gap to fill. According to Deadline, the British media financier plans to invest $120 million in US independent film and television during its first year. The move comes as a proposed federal tax credit could make financing productions more affordable.

The strategy is built on a business Head Gear already knows well: more than half of its deal flow comes from American movies, and the company has helped finance nearly 600 films. Co-founder and CEO Phil Hunt wants the new Los Angeles base to expand those relationships. He expected producers to need additional financing even if federal incentives cover a substantial share of production budgets.

The expansion also signals a bigger ambition than simply writing checks. According to Deadline, Hunt wants Head Gear to become a behind-the-scenes partner that helps producers package projects, build financing plans, manage business affairs, and collect revenue long after release. The company currently helps fund around 30 films annually, with Hunt serving as a hands-on executive producer on roughly a third.

While Head Gear Films is putting $120 million behind American indie films, one cannot help but wonder, after hearing Brad Pitt make his case, what kind of projects they think deserve the money.

Head Gear Films-type like projects

Head Gear Films does not appear to believe that independent cinema should stay in one lane. The British financier has backed everything from unsettling supernatural horror, including Talk to Me and The Hole in the Ground, to festival favorites such as Rocks. Its sweet spot is ambitious storytelling that makes limited budgets work harder.

The company also knows how to pair unconventional ideas with recognizable names, as seen in Johnny Depp’s crime drama Black Mass and Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain’s The Forgiven. Rather than chasing one formula, Head Gear moves between commercial hooks and filmmaker-driven projects, a range it can now bring to its planned $120 million investment in US independent film and television.
