“He Stole My Legacy”: Paul Bettany Addresses Robert Downey Jr. Taking Over His MCU Milestone

Paul Bettany’s Vision has gone from Tony Stark’s AI assistant to one of the MCU’s most complex Avengers. After death and resurrection, the synthezoid returns in VisionQuest to confront his identity and past. With Ultron back in the picture, Vision’s search for humanity takes another unexpected turn.
As Marvel prepares for Avengers: Doomsday, Bettany has found a rather amusing way to address another unexpected comeback: Robert Downey Jr. returning to the franchise as Doctor Doom.
Paul Bettany jokes about Robert Downey Jr. stealing his MCU legacy
During a conversation with film critic Ali Plumb on BBC Radio 1, Paul Bettany joked about losing his claim to being the MCU’s longest-running performer after Robert Downey Jr.’s return was announced. The actor, who first appeared in the franchise as J.A.R.V.I.S. in 2008 before making his physical debut as Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, quipped.
“I was [the longest-running person in the MCU] for a moment... He stole my legacy, as he has stolen so many other things from me. Maybe I still outlast him. We’ll see,” he said.

The exchange came as Bettany promoted VisionQuest, on BBC Radio 1, giving his playful complaint an appropriately Marvel-flavored twist. The joke lands because the actors have shared the franchise since the beginning. While Downey became the face of the MCU through Tony Stark, Bettany supplied the voice of the technology that helped keep Stark alive and operating. He has also defended Downey’s Marvel legacy in other interviews, arguing that the actor deserved an Oscar for Avengers: Endgame and suggesting that prejudice against superhero films played a part in the lack of recognition.
Yet the question of who outlasts whom is only the lighter side of Bettany’s latest Marvel chapter. Beneath the jokes about Downey’s comeback lies a character confronting a much more unsettling problem: surviving is one thing, but knowing who you are after being rebuilt is another.
Paul Bettany sees Frankenstein’s monster in Vision’s identity crisis
While Paul Bettany can joke about his place in Marvel history, VisionQuest explores questions far more existential than who holds the franchise longevity record. In an interview with KGET, the actor compared Vision’s search for purpose to the plight of Frankenstein’s monster, a creation struggling to understand its maker, identity, and place in the world.
“Who am I? Who made me? What am I for? What’s my purpose? Am I good? Am I bad?” he explained.

The series also brings a father-son dynamic into focus through Thomas Shepherd, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, and Ultron, the villain whose consciousness resides within Vision’s programming. Bettany praised Spader’s return, explaining that the actor consistently surprised him during filming.
“There’s nothing so good as an abandoned plan,” Bettany said.
Their reunion gives the series an opportunity to explore the contrasting possibilities of artificial intelligence, from J.A.R.V.I.S. augmenting humanity to Ultron threatening its survival.
For Bettany, Vision’s enduring appeal lies in his constant search for identity, a journey that continues even as Marvel moves toward its next cinematic event.
