Chuck Lorre revealed that Hugh Grant turned down a lucrative offer to star in his famous sitcom, Two and a Half Men. The CBS comedy, starring Charlie Sheen, was one of the most popular shows on television. However, following Sheen’s exit in 2011, Lorre initially wanted to bring the series to an end.

He was later encouraged by then-CBS chairman Les Moonves to find a new actor who could take over the lead role and give the sitcom a new direction. After a desperate hunt, the team set its sights on Grant. However, things did not go as Lorre had planned, as the deal ultimately fell through.

Chuck Lorre on Hugh Grant’s refusal to his $750k offer

In his memoir, Sitcom, Chuck Lorre reflected on his hit show Two and a Half Men and his attempt to cast Hugh Grant in the sitcom. He recalled that after Grant was selected to lead the show, the actor was offered $750,000 per episode. However, just when the deal seemed close to being finalized, he revealed that Grant backed out.

“When it came time to sign a contract and proceed, he bailed. He just bailed. I've never spoken with him since that time. Just some agent or manager called and said, 'Mr. Grant doesn't want to do this,'" he said.

Further in the book, Lorre opened up about his conversations with Grant regarding the role. He revealed that the actor had only one concern about the show, and it was about performing in front of a live studio audience. So, Lorre even offered to remove the live audience and use prerecorded laughter instead. However, the offer did not help.

Chuck Lorre weighs in on why Hugh Grant did not join TAAHM

In his interview with PEOPLE, Chuck Lorre was asked about Hugh Grant’s decision to turn down the offer to star in Two and a Half Men. The television producer believes Grant refused the role because of where he was in his career at the time. He added that the actor was perhaps no longer focused on the paycheck but rather on choosing projects that interested him.

“I would have to guess that he decided that, for his career, it wasn’t a good play,” Lorre said. “The money was secondary to his needs and demands as an actor and as an artist.”

Although the real reason behind Grant’s refusal to join the show remains unknown, things ultimately did not work out between him and the television producer. As Les Moonves had asked, Lorre continued his search to find the right actor amid his clash with Charlie Sheen. Much later, he selected Ashton Kutcher, who joined the show and took it in a new direction. While Lorre eventually found the right person for the role, the idea of Grant starring in the sitcom remains fascinating.
