Paul McCartney recently appeared on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, where he was asked about the upcoming Beatles biopic featuring Paul Mescal portraying him. During the conversation, McCartney seemed hilariously concerned about Mescal’s height, suggesting that the actor might be too short to portray him. He even raised the issue with the film’s director, Sam Mendes.

“He’s (Mescal) smaller than the guy who plays John. Sam Mendes is making the film. I said, ‘Sam, I’ve got just one thing that I need to say to you. You know, Paul [Mescal is] a bit smaller’ — I don’t know how Sam’s gonna deal with it,” McCartney said.

During his appearance on the Good Hang podcast, McCartney insisted that the members of The Beatles were all roughly the same height, with the exception of Ringo Starr, who was slightly shorter than the others. However, that may not be the case with the cast of The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, which features Harris Dickinson, Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn, and Barry Keoghan. The height difference might be noticeable, since Dickinson, who portrays John Lennon, is 6’2”, while Mescal is 5’11”.

McCartney further revealed that Mendes had sent him a still from the film of the Abbey Road crossing, in which Mescal appeared shorter than the actor playing Lennon. McCartney was quick to notice the difference and pointed it out to the director. The director explained that the difference was simply due to the way the actors were walking and sent him another picture in which they appeared to be of equal height.

However, this is not the first time McCartney has raised concerns about how the height issue on screen, as he found a similar issue in another film.

Paul McCartney recalls his issue with Nowhere Boy

Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, Nowhere Boy focuses on the early life of John Lennon. Since The Beatles played a crucial role in the lives of their members, Paul McCartney also appears in the film. However, McCartney reportedly had a similar issue with the movie, pointing out to the director that Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who portrays Lennon, appeared taller than Thomas Brodie-Sangster, who plays McCartney.

“The John character, who she later married, Aaron — he’s bigger than me in the film,” he said. “And it’s like, ‘Sam, this is not true!’”

McCartney further added that he was not satisfied with the director’s explanation but could not do anything about it, as the film had already been made. He recalled that Sam Taylor-Johnson had simply pointed out that it was a movie, not a documentary. However, it seems that McCartney’s concerns might be addressed in the upcoming Beatles biopics, with each film expected to focus on a different band member.
