Marc Summers, after all these years, reveals the truth behind his wild Late-Night feud with the late Burt Reynolds. Long before late-night television became a breeding ground for viral moments and carefully pre-packaged celebrity pranks, live talk shows operated with an unpredictable, anything-can-happen energy. While viewers tuned in expecting lighthearted banter and easy laughs, the unscripted nature of the format occasionally crossed the line from playful chaos into genuine hostility.
Decades after television screens captured a jaw-dropping clash between a beloved game show host and a legendary Hollywood icon, the shocking reality behind one of late-night's most infamous on-screen altercations has finally come to light.
Marc Summers recalls the unbelievable moment with Burt Reynolds
Speaking with PEOPLE, Marc Summers recently opened up about a bizarre and uncomfortable encounter with the late Hollywood icon Burt Reynolds during a 1994 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. For the longtime host of Nickelodeon’s Double Dare, landing a spot on the legendary late-night program was the realization of a lifelong dream rooted in his childhood obsession with Johnny Carson - an aspiration that had previously eluded him during his early radio days in Indianapolis. When his chance finally arrived in 1994, however, he found himself sharing the stage with Reynolds, who was navigating personal turbulence at the time amid a high-profile, acrimonious divorce from actress Loni Anderson.
Once the interview finally got underway, tensions spilled onto the set as Summers discussed his career hosting Double Dare. As Reynolds interjected with sharp banter, the situation quickly escalated from playful ribbing into genuine hostility. When Summers remarked on his compulsive tidiness, noting that his wife could readily vouch for his obsession with cleanliness, Reynolds abruptly reacted by dumping a glass of water directly into the host's lap.
“He straight-armed me and hit me in the face with the cup,” Summers told the PEOPLE outlet. The situation quickly escalated into total chaos when host Jay Leno introduced dessert items meant for a planned physical segment, triggering an impromptu pie fight on stage.
This further led to one of the most iconic moments in the history of Late-Night television, which fans thought to be scripted up until now.
An all-out pie war
Describing the ensuing madness, Marc Summers remarked that all hell broke loose, emphasizing that despite what skeptical viewers might have assumed, the brawl was entirely unscripted. He admitted that he felt like he was genuinely fighting for his life during the broadcast. Ironically, that unforgettable night of television ultimately proved to be a ratings triumph, as Jay Leno managed to tie with his late-night rival David Letterman for the first time - a milestone largely driven by the explosive, unexpected pandemonium that erupted between Burt Reynolds and Summers.

Despite the hostility of their televised clash, Summers maintained a sympathetic perspective toward Reynolds, reflecting on what might have been if they had forged a more positive creative partnership. He noted that they missed several opportunities to collaborate smoothly, particularly given that Reynolds served as the executive producer of Win, Lose or Draw, a game show where Summers made frequent guest appearances.
