David Letterman made late-night television feel slightly dangerous. A celebrity could arrive armed with polished anecdotes and a publicist-approved smile, then discover Letterman had chosen chaos instead. Awkward silences, mischievous questions and jokes sharp enough to draw blood were all part of the package.
Michael Douglas usually played along, appearing regularly during the earlier years of his career. Then one segment involving his mother changed the temperature completely. Douglas felt the joke had wandered somewhere deeply personal, and what followed was hardly a temporary celebrity sulk.
He stayed away from Letterman’s show for 18 years.
The Letterman joke Douglas could not forgive
In his memoir One Helluva Ride, Michael Douglas recalls being a regular Dvid Letterman guest before one appearance permanently soured the relationship. During the segment, Letterman unexpectedly played a television commercial featuring Douglas’ mother, actress Diana Dill, then began questioning him about it. Douglas felt the conversation crossed from playful teasing into ridicule aimed directly at his family.
“I said no for 18 straight years. Dave wrote me personal letters to apologize, but my feelings did not change. He had crossed a line.”

Douglas wrote in his memoir, as revealed by People, that the experience left him feeling that Letterman possessed a “real nasty sense of humor.” Invitations continued arriving, and his answer remained the same. Personal apology letters from the host failed to change his mind. The feud simply sat there, gathering dust for nearly two decades.
That finally changed in 2010. While promoting Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Douglas decided to return to the program as he prepared to publicly discuss his cancer diagnosis. He later remembered Letterman as respectful, sincere and sympathetic throughout the conversation. The encounter helped dissolve years of resentment, with Douglas concluding that carrying the grudge had ultimately weighed more heavily on him than on Letterman.
Douglas eventually buried one old feud, but another unanswered question now hangs over his Marvel future.
Could Michael Douglas return as Hank Pym in Avengers: Doomsday?
Michael Douglas is currently absent from Marvel’s official Avengers: Doomsday cast list. Paul Rudd is confirmed as Scott Lang, while Kathryn Newton will return as Cassie Lang, yet there has been no announcement placing Hank Pym inside the upcoming multiversal collision.

Douglas most recently played Hank in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where the entire Pym-Lang family became trapped inside the Quantum Realm. Marvel has therefore left the character available for another appearance, but any Doomsday return remains speculation.
The mystery grows because Marvel has openly admitted that its announced ensemble remains incomplete. Anthony Russo recently confirmed that additional familiar MCU actors will appear after Avengers Endgame: Encore revealed several surprises absent from the original casting announcement.
