Hollywood occasionally looks less like a dream factory and more like a crystal ball with a studio badge. Ronald Reagan spent years in front of cameras before moving into California politics and eventually the White House, while Clint Eastwood traded screen authority for a real stint as mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Sometimes the script feels strangely close to tomorrow’s résumé. Ben Affleck is now stepping into that uncanny territory in Animals, playing a businessman campaigning to become mayor of Los Angeles. So could the Oscar winner ever swap movie sets for ballots?
Steven Yeun has a very clear read on that possibility.
Steven Yeun thinks Affleck could but will not
At the Los Angeles premiere of Animals, Variety asked Steven Yeun whether Ben Affleck should make the jump from fictional campaigning to real political office. Yeun kept the answer simple.
“I feel like he could, but I don’t think he wants to.” The comment fits the film’s premise, especially because Affleck is no stranger to public-policy work.

He co-founded the Eastern Congo Initiative in 2010 and has testified before the U.S. House and Senate on issues concerning the Democratic Republic of Congo. That history gives Yeun’s remark extra context, although there is no announced Affleck campaign.
Kerry Washington told Variety that the cast has encouraged Affleck to run, while stressing that he has been explicit about not wanting to seek office. Affleck responded to the suggestion with a joke.
“Maybe they hate me.” For now, Affleck’s campaign trail appears firmly attached to a screenplay.
And that fictional race comes with problems far beyond polling numbers.
What is Animals about, and when does it release?
Animals puts Affleck at the center of a political thriller as Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose carefully managed life collapses after his son is kidnapped. Mark and his wife Abigail, played by Kerry Washington, must raise a ransom while navigating secrets, pressure and a widening web of deception. Netflix says the ordeal pushes the couple toward choices capable of tearing their world apart.

Affleck directs the film and co-wrote it with Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray. The ensemble also includes Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Adriana Paz, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Ray Fisher, Christopher Woodley and Matt Gerald. Affleck and Matt Damon are among the producers through Artists Equity.
Netflix has set Animals for select theaters and streaming on October 9, 2026. The trailer presents Mark as a polished candidate and family man before the kidnapping shatters that image, turning a mayoral race into a test of marriage, morality and survival.
