HBO has cast Harry Gilby as Charlie Weasley in its upcoming Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone adaptation. With the first season approaching its Christmas 2026 debut, the production continues to fill in the corners of a wizarding world already familiar to millions. Some of its most interesting additions, however, belong to characters the original films never gave much room to breathe.
Charlie Weasley has been one of them, having been largely kept beyond the reader’s immediate view but always at the back of their minds, that is, until Harry Gilby stepped through the magical barrier.

The eldest Weasley siblings have lives that extend well beyond Hogwarts, and Charlie’s fascination with dragons gives him a particularly distinct path. While his younger siblings navigate school, Quidditch and the occasional catastrophe, Charlie works with dragons in Romania, making his absence from the original film series all the more noticeable. Now, Harry Gilby’s has been cast as Charlie, giving the character another opportunity to become more than a name in Ron’s family conversations.

Gilby joins Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn, who have been cast as James and Lily Potter, Harry’s parents (via The Hollywood Reporter). The ensemble already includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron. John Lithgow will play Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
In hindsight, Gilby arrives with a screen résumé that offers a more intriguing introduction than a simple casting announcement.
From historical drama to the wizarding world: All the places Harry Gilby has been
Before stepping into the Potter universe, Harry Gilby built credits across film, television and theatre. He played young J.R.R. Tolkien in the 2019 biographical film Tolkien, entering another celebrated fantasy author’s life long before the books became cultural landmarks. Gilby’s earlier work also includes Just Charlie, the drama that earned him a British Independent Film Award nomination for Most Promising Newcomer in 2017.
His television credits include The Last Kingdom, where he played Aethelstan, as well as Boarders, Grantchester and Casualty. Those projects have taken him through coming-of-age drama, contemporary stories and historical worlds, giving his career a category-resistant range.

Charlie brings a different sort of assignment: a beloved supporting character whose dragon expertise can bring a corner of wizarding life beyond classroom spells into view. As HBO continues building its adaptation, casting Charlie gives the Weasley family another dimension, and Gilby a chance to make a familiar name newly visible.
