HBO Max swept the Gotham TV Awards Monday night at Manhattan's Cipriani Wall Street, claiming five trophies despite Netflix entering the ceremony with a commanding 22 nominations. The prestigious awards serve as an important warm-up as Hollywood inches closer to September's Emmy Awards, with HBO Max emerging as the clear frontrunner.

The stark contrast between Netflix's nomination count and final trophy haul reveals a significant gap between recognition and victory.

Despite leading with 22 nominations, Netflix failed to convert most of its buzz into actual wins, leaving empty-handed in major categories. HBO Max's DTF St. Louis became the only show to win multiple awards, taking home Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Outstanding Supporting Performance for David Harbour. The platform also claimed Breakthrough Comedy Series with Rachel Sennott's I Love LA, cementing its dominance across categories.

Netflix's Beef and Death by Lightning were shut out of their respective limited series categories, reflecting a night where momentum did not translate into trophies. Michael Shannon delivered one of the platform’s rare victories, winning Lead Performance for Death by Lightning. That win stood out in an otherwise quiet showing for the streaming giant.

The broader awards landscape highlighted HBO Max's range and consistency. Tim Robinson secured Outstanding Lead Performance in a Comedy Series for The Chair Company, adding to the platform’s tally. Laurie Metcalf brought home Supporting Comedy for Netflix’s Big Mistakes, while Chase Infiniti and Babou Ceesay claimed drama acting honors for The Testaments and Alien: Earth, respectively. HBO Max’s five wins ultimately underscored that quality carried more weight than sheer volume at this year’s ceremony.

Apple TV's Pluribus won Breakthrough Drama Series at the Gotham TV Awards, cementing Vince Gilligan's sci-fi epic as one of the night's defining successes. The series stars Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka, a woman navigating a world reshaped by an alien virus that has turned most of humanity into a hive mind. Her performance has already earned major recognition, including a Golden Globe nomination.

The show was greenlit with a two-season straight-to-series order, bypassing the traditional pilot route. Season 2 is currently in development, with filming expected to begin in fall 2026. Karolina Wydra, who plays Zosia, has expressed excitement about returning, hinting at a continuation of the story’s evolving character dynamics.

Season 2 is expected to arrive in 2027 and will further explore Carol’s alliance with Manousos following the first season’s finale. Returning cast members include Karolina Wydra, Samba Schutte, and Menik Gooneratne, while Miriam Shor’s role will be limited due to her character’s fate. Vince Gilligan has cautioned that production will take time, with fewer episodes finalized so far, but the next chapter promises to deepen the story’s emotional and sci-fi stakes.
