HBO’s Baldur’s Gate TV Series in the Works With Craig Mazin at the Helm
HBO never misses when it comes to turning cult-favorite videos into generational blockbuster adaptations. Now, it has set its keen eye on the iconic Forgotten Realms Dungeons & Dragons game, Baldur's Gate, for a new television adaptation. Veteran showrunner Craig Mazin, who co-created and leads The Last of Us, is recruited to bring this series to life.
With a special focus on premium character-driven narratives that sow the seeds of depth in sprawling fantasy worlds, HBO is set to present a one-of-a-kind story of ancient power struggles.

The HBO show will follow the critically acclaimed role-playing video game, depicting what happens after the main events through both existing and new characters, instead of retelling old sagas. The series begins after Baldur's Gate 3, and it would show how the world reacts to and follows a new set of heroes in political conflicts, mystical battles and the harsh conditions of the Forgotten Realms.
The story will follow Dungeons & Dragons rules, which require characters to develop through challenges, while writer and showrunner Craig Mazin intends to bring back past characters who will show their in-game progress.
“After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created... I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can,” Mazin said about the HBO adaptation, per Deadline.
HBO has not yet revealed its complete cast or premiere date, but the project has also begun creating buzz among gamers and bingers alike because of Mazin's presence and its connection to the popular RPG story. The show might feature characters from Baldur's Gate 3, who include Lae'zel, Shadowheart, Astarion, Gale, Karlach and other characters as part of its cast, although the live-action actors will differ from the original game voices.
For the uninitiated, Baldur's Gate first arrived in 1998 and ever since then has become a legend of its own within the gaming world.

In this game, players progress through a detailed narrative where their choices create relationships and enemies, some villains, and some literal demons. It is based on Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, with the party being limited to 4 characters. The players build their individual legacy throughout the cinematic tactical RPG gameplay, much like HBO's pursuit of producing exceptional video-game adaptations.
