If Rogue has one thing that can rival her iconic black-and-white hair, it is that unmistakable Southern drawl. Rooted in her Mississippi origins, the X-Men mutant’s warm, teasing accent and signature “sugar” have become as iconic as her power-draining touch, thanks in part to Lenore Zann’s memorable voice work in the classic animated series. And as the new Rogue, Inde Navarrette is not letting that detail slip past her.

The actress has offered fans a playful teaser of her own take on Rogue’s Southern twang, even admitting that practice has been limited.

Rogue can steal your powers with a touch, but getting her Southern drawl right is another matter entirely. During a carpet interview with Canadian entertainment program Etalk, Inde Navarrette was asked to deliver the mutant’s beloved “sugar,” and she offered a refreshingly honest preview of her take on the iconic catchphrase.

“God bless me, I haven’t done a lot of practice. But, ah! I mean, my version’s just, ‘Sugar,'” Navarrette confessed with a smile.

Speaking to Etalk, the actress promised to keep working on her accent and figure out the approach with the Marvel team. That willingness to keep refining her performance fits neatly with the creative philosophy she shared elsewhere.

In another interview, Navarrette described acting as the freedom to become someone entirely different, naming Rogue, whose real name is Anna Marie, as an example. She also spoke about honoring Marvel’s writers while adding her own personal touch under director Jake Schreier. In other words, Navarrette intends to respect Rogue’s established identity without simply copying what came before, and her Southern drawl is part of that balancing act, as she teased to Etalk.

Speaking from Dublin, Ireland, Zann gave Navarrette a warm shoutout and expressed her excitement about meeting the actress who would bring Rogue to life on the big screen. Naturally, the veteran voice actress signed off with the character’s signature “sugar,” making the message feel like Rogue herself was welcoming her successor. For Navarrette, it was a warm welcome from the voice that helped make Rogue an animated icon.
