Purists prefer to keep some classics untouched. But what happens when blind hate consumes the collective conscience? In an interview with The Sunday Times of London, Paapa Essiedu explained that the public response online to his casting choice, which he described as both extremely strong and unsettling to him, has nonetheless affected him emotionally. The actor received racially charged hate and death threats demanding that he leave his role.

Essiedu told the outlet that whenever he looked at Instagram, he would find hostile comments jeopardizing his safety. While he is aware of the limited intensity of the threats, he would not wish for anyone doing their job to encounter such a fate.

“I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll m***** you,’ [...] Many people put their lives on the line in their work. I’m playing a wizard in Harry Potter. And I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally," the actor said.

However, he maintained his dedication to both the character and his role because he believes the backlash fuels his fighter spirit. The role that would bring him valuable professional opportunities, he called it a big commitment, as the series set to launch in 2027, would end a decade later.

HBO announced that Essiedu would play Severus Snape, previously pioneered by Alan Rickman, in the original film series, which fuelled the controversy. Some fans criticized the casting because Snape is described differently in the books, while others defended the decision, arguing that acting ability should matter more than physical resemblance. Meanwhile, former Harry Potter stars have come out in support of Essiedu without hesitation.

Though the fanbase divided itself between two opposing sides after the debate reached social media platforms, veteran actors from the original films wasted no time in firing back at the horrifying threats.

Paapa Essiedu comes with strong endsorments despite backlash

Jason Isaacs, who immortalized the character of Lucius Malfoy in the original Harry Potter film series, has backed Paapa Essiedu in a heartbeat. Isaacs shut down the racist comments against the actor, calling them rude. To him, Essiedu has always been one of the best actors, to his knowledge.

"They will be swallowing their tongues, hopefully — you know, their digital tongues — when they see what [Essiedu] does on screen," Isaacs confidently said at FanExpo Denver.

Despite the mounting backlash, Essiedu would want the series to introduce modern audiences to Harry Potter while delivering contemporary storytelling and diverse representation. As an avid reader of J.K. Rowling's books in his childhood, the actor would have loved to see characters mirroring him represented in the saga.

Now, that opportunity is thrust upon him, which he would gladly shoulder. For Essiedu, the threats do not take as much toll on him as they motivate him to not be intimidated by people diminishing his efforts on the job to nothing by asking him to rather perish than portray Snape.
