Gary Oldman is well known as the loyal yet slightly rebellious Sirius Black in the Harry Potter films. But he was not exactly much help, as Richard Crosby, in the famous sitcom Friends. His character’s hilarious antics made it quite difficult for Joey to reach Monica and Chandler’s wedding in time to officiate.
Despite the brief appearance, the hilarious encounter remains one of the show’s most memorable guest appearances. However, Oldman may never have landed the role if it were not for his friend and Friends star Matt LeBlanc. Even decades later, the actor fondly recalled how he ended up getting the part.
Gary Oldman’s Friends role came with little help from Matt LeBlanc
Gary Oldman recently appeared at an afternoon panel discussion at the Toronto International Film Festival. During the conversation, the actor praised his longtime friend Matt LeBlanc and recalled the time he starred in Friends. Oldman revealed that LeBlanc, whom he became friends with after working together on the 1998 film Lost in Space, offered him the role on the hit sitcom.
“We became buddies, and the [role of Crosby, an actor] came up. He said, ‘Would you like to do it?’”

Oldman also said he was impressed by the sitcom’s quick and well-organized production process (via Entertainment Weekly). He went on to praise the rest of the cast, including Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, and the late Matthew Perry. For those who may not remember, Oldman played Richard Crosby, an actor who worked with Joey, in the two-part episode titled The One With Monica and Chandler’s Wedding.
Oldman is not the only surprise guest star to appear on the show. Another memorable guest appearance was of Julia Roberts, who played Susie Moss in the sitcom.
90s’ rom com queen Julia Robert’s appearance in Friends
After the success of the first season of Friends, Season 2 showed one of the show’s most memorable cameos by bringing Julia Roberts into Episode 13, titled The One After the Super Bowl: Part 2. She appeared as Chandler’s former schoolmate, Susie Moss, and quickly became the center of his attention. However, their encounter is not exactly a romantic reunion.

Instead, Susie has revenge in mind, leading to a hilarious twist at the end. Throughout its run, Friends featured several memorable guest appearances that made the show even more entertaining. Reese Witherspoon appeared as Rachel’s stubborn sister, while Winona Ryder played Melissa in another memorable episode. So whether it is Richard Crosby and Joey's hilarious battle or Susie Moss’ revenge, Friends has always created the best cameos.
