As Hacks prepares to air its final episode this week, Hannah Einbinder shared an emotional tribute to creators Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky, and Lucia Aniello while reflecting on the five-season journey that began back in 2021. The actress revealed she had no acting experience before joining the series, admitting the only reason she felt connected to Ava Daniels was because the character felt “so real.” Einbinder additionally praised the creators for shaping Ava through the same passion, loyalty, humor, and emotional depth they carried in real life.
“It’s a good representation of how we feel about each other, and of the support and love Paul, Jen, and Lucia have always shown me. I had no acting experience when I started on Hacks (sorry) – but I think the reason I could do the job was because the character they created in Ava was so real. I remember reading the audition scene and thinking damn. I wanna chill with her. She would be my best friend for sure. As I came to get to know Paul, Jen and Lucia, I realized that the qualities I loved in Ava were qualities of theirs. They’re passionate and fiercely loyal, goofy as hell, and their hearts bleed for the people they love,” Einbinder wrote in her Instagram caption.
Einbinder further described Hacks as the project that completely transformed her career and personal life. The actress revealed the show gave her the ability to tour, release her own stand-up special, grow creatively as an actor, and build what she called a “great big family” through the cast and crew. Calling herself “the luckiest person on Earth” to be part of the series, Einbinder emotionally admitted she remains endlessly proud of what the team created together and how they managed to create it.
And before Hacks finally signs off, the Emmy-winning drama’s legacy is already being cemented as one of HBO Max’s biggest modern comedy successes.
How Hacks became one of HBO Max’s biggest comedy hits
Hacks first premiered in 2021 and quickly evolved into one of HBO Max’s most celebrated originals. The dark comedy-drama followed the chaotic partnership between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance, played by Jean Smart, and struggling comedy writer Ava Daniels, portrayed by Hannah Einbinder. Across five seasons and 46 episodes, the series explored fame, stand-up comedy, generational conflict, and Hollywood politics while slowly turning Deborah and Ava’s messy dynamic into the emotional core of the show.
