Hacks creators want to release a DVD box set for the show due to the uncertain future of streaming platforms. HBO’s Hacks is arguably one of the best comedy dramas out there right now, and there is a reason for it. The razor-sharp, funny chemistry between its two main leads - Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder - and its astute, on-point writing are all the reasons why Hacks has a huge following.
The show skillfully balances heartfelt humor with laugh-out-loud moments as it navigates ego, ambition, and the entertainment industry. As the show is about to end its run with a fifth season, the creators of the show have something special planned that comes out of fear of changing times rather than love for the fans.
The creators recently revealed that they intend to release a DVD box set of the show due to the corporate instability prevalent nowadays.

Hacks creators want DVDs to save the show
Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, the creators of the comedy-drama series Hacks, told Deadline that they intend to release a complete series DVD box set after the show's May 28 finale while talking about the fifth and final season of their HBO Max series. According to them, the future of streaming is still uncertain due to the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger and other Hollywood acquisitions.
“It’s such an important time for people to invest in physical media because you’re right, things are coming down all the time, and it’s like, ‘Oh, I love that movie, I want to see it.’ You just can’t, babe, it doesn’t exist,” said Aniello.
Aniello further adds that this gives algorithms, people's whims, and certain CEOs who do not like someone's brother a lot of control over how art is distributed. As a result, their film, television program, or other work may be removed. The concept of censorship is extremely unsettling, particularly in light of the increasing number of businesses being acquired by other businesses.
“And so, we’re really hoping to make a Hacks DVD box set, for one. We’re trying to make that happen. That’s an exclusive. Please go buy it, not because we make any money off of it. We just want to make sure the show stays in existence for as long as DVD players exist,” urged Aniello.
Their objective is to provide fans with something long-lasting that is independent of streaming services' continued operations or the availability of titles. However, Aniello clarified that there is still no official confirmation of the idea. She stated that although they are working to make it happen, they are unsure if it will proceed. Nevertheless, she stressed the significance of maintaining the show in a physical manner.
But all this makes one wonder if their concern has any grounds that got them running for a drastic fix.
A legitimate concern
There is a genuine reason why the Hacks creators are worried for the existence of their show. In recent years, the industry has witnessed streamers remove television series and movies, often just weeks after they were released, plunging them into a virtual limbo from which they might never emerge.

Batgirl, a finished $90 million movie, and many animated programs were notoriously removed by HBO Max. Numerous original series have been quietly withdrawn from Disney+. Star Trek: Prodigy was canceled by Paramount+ in the middle of production. Despite receiving praise from critics and winning numerous Emmys, Hacks is especially susceptible because corporate owners see content as a tax obligation rather than a work of art that should be preserved.
