Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth is making its way back to UK cinemas, giving audiences another chance to experience the 2006 fantasy classic on the big screen. The film earned its reputation as a masterpiece by turning the idea of a fairy tale on its head. It blended fantastical elements with a much darker vision. The film made quite an impression at the Cannes Film Festival too, where it received a remarkable 22-minute standing ovation. Now, fans can revisit del Toro’s acclaimed film in cinemas once again.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth is getting an extended release in UK cinemas as the acclaimed film marks its anniversary.
A dark fairy tale is making its way back to the big screen
Guillermo del Toro’s acclaimed 2006 dark fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth arrived back in cinemas on October 9, 2026, marking 20 years since its release. Rather than the usual one- or two-night engagement associated with Fathom Events, the anniversary rerelease is rolling out as an extended theatrical run nationwide. The screenings also bring an upgraded viewing experience, featuring a 4K restoration, a brand-new Dolby Atmos mix, and a custom-converted 3D and HDR presentation.

Apart from just UK, StudioCanal is bringing Pan’s Labyrinth back to cinemas across the Europe from October 30, giving international audiences another chance to catch Guillermo del Toro’s dark fantasy on the big screen. The screenings are expected to continue into mid-November, extending the film’s theatrical return beyond its initial US run. While the world is celebrating the fantasy thriller, it is surprising to know that the creator himself did not have a very pleasant experience making it.
In fact, Guillermo del Toro called making Pan's Labyrinth the second worst filmmaking experience of his life.
Guillermo del Toro hated making Pan's Labyrinth
If Mimic was Guillermo del Toro’s worst experience behind the camera, Pan’s Labyrinth was not exactly a walk in the park either. The filmmaker described making the 2006 dark fantasy as “going against everything at all times” while speaking at Cannes. Unlike Mimic, the film was not plagued by the same level of studio interference, but a host of logistical, financial and physical hurdles still made the shoot a grueling experience.

Guillermo del Toro spent years trying to get the project off the ground, but Hollywood and international financiers were reluctant to fund a big-budget dark fairy tale told entirely in Spanish. By the time filming wrapped, the money had run out, forcing the filmmaker to secure emergency funding out of his own pocket to complete the visual effects and sound design.
