Barbie's road back to the big screen is turning out to be far bumpier than anyone expected. Despite the 2023 film becoming a billion-dollar cultural phenomenon, Warner Bros. is now racing against the clock to lock down a sequel deal with director Greta Gerwig and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling before the rights to the franchise revert to Mattel.

With a hard December deadline looming and months of stalled negotiations behind them, the fate of Barbie 2 has suddenly become one of Hollywood's most closely watched contract standoffs.

According to The New York Times, Warner Bros. has been negotiating with Gerwig, Robbie, and Gosling for months, but none of the three ever signed sequel clauses tied to the original film. The studio has reportedly offered raises along with a cut of the profits once the film clears certain box office milestones, and Gosling's asking price alone is said to sit around $20 million. 

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, however, is said to have baulked at the proposed terms, viewing them as too generous. On the contrary, a studio spokesperson disputed that characterization, saying talent representatives turned down a May offer and have yet to submit a counteroffer, as per The New York Times. Studio co-chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca addressed the standoff directly, stating that Warner Bros. has made a series of major offers to try to finalize the deal but has been unable to reach an agreement so far.

Complicating matters further, sources say Gerwig and her writing partner and husband, Noah Baumbach, already have a story idea in mind for the sequel and are reportedly ready to begin writing, but are deliberately withholding it from the studio and refusing to put anything on paper until contracts are finalized.

The stakes here go well beyond a simple pay dispute. If Warner Bros. cannot finalize deals with Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling by December, the film rights to Barbie will revert to Mattel entirely, and the studio would lose the ability to use any story elements or talent from the original film going forward. In practice, that means Mattel could take the property to a different studio and rebuild Barbie completely from scratch, with an entirely new cast, director, and creative vision replacing the one that made the original such a cultural sensation.

Even if a deal is reached before the deadline, reports suggest fans should not expect a quick turnaround. Given how early the sequel remains in development, with a script not yet written, a Barbie sequel would likely still be years away from theaters, with some estimates pointing toward a possible 2029 or 2030 release. For now, all eyes are on whether Warner Bros. can close the deal in time or whether Barbieland ends up changing owners entirely.
