Dragons were not the only thing setting House of the Dragon fans ablaze after the Season 3 premiere. As longtime Fire & Blood readers continue to debate the show’s decision to completely cut Nettles and hand much of her storyline to Rhaena Targaryen, showrunner Ryan Condal has finally broken his silence on the controversial change, explaining why Rhaena’s “great wish” ultimately became her “greatest nightmare.” Now, amid the growing discourse surrounding the Battle of the Gullet, book readers may finally have a new perspective to consider.
Here is what Condal said about the decision, which was not just about removing a character but about expanding one who had been waiting for her moment since Season 1.

In Fire & Blood, Nettles is a dragonseed who bonds with the wild dragon Sheepstealer and fights in the Battle of the Gullet. House of the Dragon, however, removes the character entirely and transfers much of her storyline to Daemon Targaryen’s daughter, Rhaena. Speaking to IGN, Ryan Condal explained that the series is ultimately a family story, making it more meaningful to expand an established Targaryen character, especially one whose arc has revolved around being the only dragonless member of her family since Season 1. According to Condal, Rhaena finally claiming a dragon fulfilled her greatest wish, only for it to quickly become her greatest nightmare.
"She gets her great wish and it becomes her greatest nightmare," Condal told IGN.
While Condal's IGN revelation may leave book readers divided, Rhaena’s dream quickly turns into a nightmare during the Battle of the Gullet. No sooner does she claim Sheepstealer than the untamed dragon throws the battlefield into chaos, inadvertently pushing Jace and Vermax toward their doom. Meanwhile, Baela’s unexpected presence in the battle gives her a devastating front-row view of her betrothed’s final moments, adding yet another emotional wound to an already catastrophic day for the Black
However, Nettles is not the only casualty of HBO’s adaptation, as the Battle of the Gullet itself arrives with several major departures from Martin’s source material.
Other major Battle of the Gullet changes from Fire & Blood
Perhaps the biggest omission involves Prince Aegon III and Prince Viserys II, who play a crucial role in the book’s version of the battle. In Fire & Blood, the young princes are caught in the conflict while sailing to Pentos, leading to Viserys’ disappearance and a storyline that eventually shapes the future of House Targaryen.
The series removes that entire sequence, largely because both characters are significantly younger in the adaptation and had already been sent away before the battle began. As a result, Stormcloud’s heroic rescue flight and Viserys’ famous “lost prince” arc are absent from the show.

The HBO adaptation also expands the roles of several other characters while rewriting key outcomes. Baela Targaryen and her dragon, Moondancer, actively participate in the battle despite not doing so in the book, giving her a front-row seat to Jace’s death. Lord Corlys Velaryon likewise joins the fighting rather than remaining on the sidelines, while Sharako Lohar meets an early end at the hands of Alyn of Hull despite surviving the battle in Martin’s version.
Thus, if Ryan Condal’s explanation is any indication, Rhaena’s story is only getting started, even if it came at the expense of one of Fire & Blood’s most beloved characters.
