Grant Morrison is bringing James Bond back to comics, giving the legendary British spy a new creative direction beyond the familiar world of film adaptations. The celebrated writer has spent years reshaping some of comics’ most recognizable characters, from Superman’s optimism to Batman’s darker psychological territory. Bond, meanwhile, remains one of popular culture’s most enduring figures, with a legacy that leaves plenty of room for a writer willing to take creative risks.
Morrison’s work often finds its most interesting possibilities in the tension between a character’s established mythology and the unexpected directions that mythology can take. That makes the writer an intriguing choice for a franchise built on espionage, reinvention, elaborate gadgets, and villains with world-changing ambitions.

The world of 007 is getting a new comic book home, and the creative team behind the project has a distinctive vision for the character. Known for All-Star Superman, an acclaimed multi-year run on Batman, and boundary-pushing titles such as Animal Man and Doom Patrol, Morrison brings considerable experience reworking established comic book mythology. IDW CEO Davidi Jonas explained the publisher’s approach in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Pairing a renowned franchise like James Bond with the visionary writer Grant Morrison is a perfect example of IDW doing what it does best with licensed properties.” Jonas added.
The ambition is to deliver more than supplementary adventures, positioning Bond for a fresh chapter in modern comics.
That creative freedom could prove especially interesting for a character whose screen identity has shifted across generations, from Sean Connery’s cool assurance to Daniel Craig’s more bruised, emotionally exposed interpretation.
Grant Morrison promises a headline-inspired villain in James Bond’s new comic
Grant Morrison is approaching James Bond as more than a familiar collection of tuxedos, Aston Martins, and shaken martinis. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the opening six-part adventure is titled Sunbreaker, although the overall comic book series has not yet received an announced title. The project also has no confirmed artist or release date.
“I’ve been a James Bond fan for as long as I can remember,” Morrison said, describing the opportunity to put a personal stamp on a British icon.
The writer also promised new cars, gadgets, and an ultimate villain drawn straight from the headlines. Describing Sunbreaker, Morrison said readers should expect Bond to face unfamiliar enemies in a world resembling our own “as reflected in a deadly funhouse mirror.”

Bond first appeared in Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel Casino Royale before making his cinematic debut in Dr. No in 1962. His comic book history has been more intermittent, spanning publishers including Marvel, Eclipse, Dark Horse, and Dynamite. IDW’s acquisition therefore gives the franchise a significant new publishing platform.
Morrison’s James Bond comic has the potential to combine classic espionage thrills with the writer’s appetite for unexpected ideas.
