Watching Mahershala Ali in Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother delivers visceral action sequences that immediately remind fans of the lost opportunity surrounding his cancelled Marvel project, Blade. The two-time Oscar winner plays Latif, a devout Muslim hitman balancing violence, faith, and fatherhood after his wife's death.

His physicality gives the film's combat scenes unusual weight, particularly because the skills on display were developed during preparation for a superhero role that never reached production.

What began as years of frustration surrounding Blade has now found an unexpected purpose in his new movie.

Speaking to Deadline during the promotional run for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, Mahershala Ali revealed Marvel's indirect contribution to the film's production.

"There's no way we could've done this film and I got to train for a year," he stated, acknowledging that Marvel technically funded his extensive sword and combat training before the Blade reboot collapsed. Marvel's investment in his preparation became an unexpected gift, enabling Ali and director Bassam Tariq to execute ambitious action scenes on a modest budget.

Ali expressed genuine gratitude toward Marvel despite the disappointment of Blade's cancellation, which suffered from script issues, multiple director departures, and prolonged development hell.

"So at this point I'm grateful they made a wonderful contribution to our film," he told Deadline, reflecting on how the training financed by Marvel enhanced his performance in Tariq's film.

The Blade reboot faced numerous setbacks, including writers cycling through the project, directors like Tariq and Yann Demange exiting, and Marvel's eventual removal of the film from its release calendar. Ali noted that despite being under contract, the studio chose not to move forward with a project they had announced at Comic-Con 2019, leaving him in limbo for seven years before officially moving on in July 2026.

That redemption arrives at a moment when Marvel itself is facing fresh questions over its other cancelled projects.

Marvel's cancellation of Wonder Man Season 2 came just four months after Disney+ had announced its renewal. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who earned an Emmy nomination for playing Simon Williams, later said he was told the decision was connected to viewership numbers, although he was not given the figures behind the choice. Abdul-Mateen also addressed the discussion surrounding Wonder Man and Blade arriving so close together.

“I think the optics are obvious,” he told Vanity Fair, arguing that Marvel and Disney should examine why projects led by Black actors were encountering these setbacks. He said Wonder Man had quality storytelling, resources, performers, and positive responses from viewers and Emmy voters, and deserved serious examination.

Wonder Man's fate fits a troubling broader pattern of stalled or cancelled Marvel projects, including Don Cheadle's Armor Wars and Mahershala Ali's Blade. Armor Wars, originally developed as a Disney+ series before transitioning to a feature film, has reportedly been stalled indefinitely despite Cheadle's War Machine appearing prominently throughout the MCU.
